I know that the world is being infected this week but I have a question that may or may not be virus related.

I have a toshiba laptop running xp.

All of a sudden this problem started to occur.

If I do not use my computer for around 10 minutes the computer is automatically going into standby mode. All I need to get back to where I was is to hit the power button -- but this is pretty annoying.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this.

thanks -- see y'all at the bash on friday

Kapper,
Thats a safety feature for your laptop regarding the battery, Its actually for your own good, its saving the batteries life.

You could fix it by right clicking on the desk top, go to properties and then screen saver and power, there you have the option of how much time before the computer shuts down when theres no activity.

Do you have different user accounts set up on the laptop? - you might only be able to change if you have admin priveleges. Check in Control Panel under User Accounts if you're not sure

Computer shut down problem

Very strange indeed. I have a toshiba about one year old. It has started to do the same thing within the last two weeks and will not let me change. I have been just going along with in for the time being, until i had the chance to research it.

we used to have some older Toshibas that would go into sleep mode because of defective batteries, regardless of the settings. Sometimes just removing the battery and reinserting would clear it up.

Are there any power settings in the system setup? see if you can control it there when you boot up to override the windows settings

Remove the factory installed OS, in your case XP and do a clean install. Never liked the factory installed OS. I bet you have the Home Edition?

To uninstall a single program, I would recommend the following software (Your Uninstaller) http://www.ursoftware.com/

Good luck
