Beantown once again gets nod as best sports town

spacer.gif

<!-- begin body-content -->

After a year in which the curse was reversed and the Patriots won the Super Bowl (again), Boston has earned its second straight designation as America’s top sports city.

The Sporting News on Tuesday honored Boston for the third time in four years. The magazine’s annual ranking is published in the edition available on newsstands today.

The honor recognizes the home of the Red Sox, who rallied from a three-games-to-none deficit to win the American League pennant, then swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series; and the New England Patriots, whose win over Philadelphia in the Super Bowl gave them three championships in four years.

“It’s not unusual for one team to dominate a sport for a few years,” Sporting News executive editor Bob Hille said. “But to see a city dominate the sports landscape the way Boston has recently is amazing. If you thought any other city had a shot at No. 1, you weren’t paying much attention to the sports world.”

In addition, the city saw a Celtics playoff run and a March Madness invitation for Boston College.

Los Angeles/Anaheim took top honors in 2003.

The rest of this year’s top 10, in order: Philadelphia, Detroit, Miami, Los Angeles/Anaheim, Houston, Baltimore/Washington, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Atlanta and New York/New Jersey.

The ranking looks at 388 sports cities or regions. At the bottom is Tampa-St. Petersburg. The magazine cites the NFL’s Buccaneers’ 5-11 record, the continued struggles of baseball’s Devil Rays, and the pre-empted NHL season for the defending Stanley Cup champion Lightning.

36. Kansas City

If they base it on a teams record how does this 2 sport city do so well (top 10%) chiefs were 7-9 last year and they have the Royals. Last time I checked the Bruins were on strike too.

Tough to argue when they are just behind that notable sports hotbed of Princeton, W.Va.

What a joke..Nawlins that high, when it has the Aints, Hornets, and Tulane..yet Austin further below with excellent UT sports, Round Rock Express experience, and adopted Spurs just 80 miles away..Tampa has recent titles in two of the four major pro sports and an excellent youth baseball reputation..I've lived in Houston, and outside of the new facilities and promising future of the Texans, the history of the Stros, Oilers, and Rockets(sans Clutch City B2B titles) is mostly heartbreak for it's loyal and supportive H-town fanbases.. The Braves have a lone WS crown for all the NL East streak hoopla, and the Falcs, Hawks, also former Flames are mediocre historically(add GT sports also)..Nashville and Memphis based on what?(minor league baseball parks or mediocre college sports in town?)...the list is comical!

I hope this jackass never has to come here for a Superbowl or a Final Four, or Regional event.

You can also add major boxing match-up host to Tampa's list, They are home to a 3 time arena football champion as well. They are also a fishing and golfing hot-bed as well.

And if Poker is a sport there are more Poker tables in the city of Tampa (3 poker rooms well over 100 hundred tables) than any other city east of the mississippi !!!!!

I'm done with sporting news. The article was written by the entire staff they are a complete JOKE.

Don't take it too hard guys, as a magazine article, it wouldn't have much of a hook if it didn't put a big pro market in last place. They can't exactly spend a few paragraphs describing why Pasco, Washington is a crappy sports town. Just pretend like you took 30th of 300 or something.

5Team,

Slow down. They had a couple of interviews with the guy who created the list and he acknowledged that Tampa was chosen last "ceremonially", primarily because the Rays suck and the year the Lightning finally won something, the city got screwed out of celebrating it. I don't think there was any harm meant.

I will say this, having lived in Tampa off and on for the last 10 years: there are no bigger bandwagon fans than those in Tampa. I'm waiting for the Bucs to cool down for a year or two and then tickets will be plentiful. I was at the first ever Rays game--sold out. The next day, there were barely 17,000 there. The Lightning filled The Trop (then called the ThunderDome) with 60,000 for their first ever playoff game vs. Philly (I was there, too.), but you could easily find tickets the next season over at the Ice Palace when the team was doing so well.

I've lived other places where the teams sucked, but you still couldn't get a seat in the place.

This quote is nonsense. We had the worst franchise record in the history of sports, for two decades. Yet we still drew 40,000. That is alot for an area that is not nearly as populated as the dirty northern cities that send boatloads of refugees down here from there. Most of the inhabitants here are from those grimey, disease ridden holes and they are the ones who are the bandwagoneers. They wear there native town jerseys when our teams are down and ours when we are up.

We need a couple of generations to be born here, grow up here and have kids here so that there are enough to fill through the bad times. We were raped by the most crooked owner ever for an eternity. We had no history, all we knew was losing. So now, yes we are a little conditioned to not get overly excited about winning streaks at the end of the year.

Not to mention that it is all happening again to us with the fucking Devil Rays and Vince Namoli. This place is paradise compared to the fucking colonies. If you dont believe me ask your relatives....I can go down stairs and get them if you need.

I didn't know what could possibly bring me out of posting retirement. This idiot did. #388 my arse.

Yes these folk down here are bandwagon riders supreme. Remember however they are mere babes. Bucs didn't get here till 1976. Yes this is still "gooberville." But last!!! Give me a frigging break. :monsters-

As for bandwagon fans, I submit to you Atlanta. NFL games played in a empty dome for years before the Dirty Bird run, Braves playoff games that weren't sold out. Even those couple of years the Hawks and Laettner were good no one went.

I will admit that Tampa has had 3 sports owners like no others--Hugh Culverhouse, Namoli, and whatever Japanese consortium once allegedly owned the Lightning. NONE of the people are willing to spend a few dollars to bring a winner to town.

The Bucs became better with the arrival of the Glazers and the Davidson family eventually saved the Lightning. The Rays need someone similar to step in.

I moved away from here in '99 (when the Bucs were okay, but pre-Super Bowl and the Lightning sucked) and returned last summer, right after the Cup run. There's about 25 times the amount of Buc merchandise/flags/license plates displayed in town now than when I left. Where were all those people in the late 90's? They're slowly falling off the bandwagon now--my neighbor who used to decorate his house like Christmas for every Bucs home game had a lone sign in his yard yesterday.

Give it another year or two and tickets will be plentiful again.
