Given the massive popularity of the National Football League, it's surprising that the sport is shrouded in so much misunderstanding and wagering misconception. As we approach the September 8 regular season kickoff, let's try to separate myth from reality.

Read the rest of David Scott's latest column by going to the NEW Rx home page at www.therx.com.

Then read Fezzik's new article titled "Preseason: Play or Pass?" This article will explain if betting NFL preseason games has any value.

Fine article by David Scott, very interesting.

There is no such thing as a "trap" game.

I couldn't agree more with that statement.

Several other points are well worth reading.

I disagree also about there being no 'traps' anymore! Whether it is a local book offering you an off number or Pinnacle offering you an off number(meaning that number is not seen on the screen) there certainly are traps. I have set them and fallen into them, but they certainly do exist. Especially when you have just held a whole order from Walters or the Pokers or half a dozen others!

Sat next to Fezz at the Bash and he was very informative and entertaining for the 30-ish minutes he was there

But that last line makes me shudder - the thought of seeing him naked :monsters- :monsters-

Mr. Fezzik was very informative at the Bash and was a real gentleman. I enjoyed every minute of listening to him and to you also winky.

I agree with pretty much all of the article...

On the issue regarding how lines are set, i kinda disagree...I know for a fact the superbowl its pretty much the public the casinos count on but there are other events where this becomes a factor.. Very many games indeed like Notre dame, OSU vs Michigan, various bowl games...

I would say the majority are set to "sharps" but there are games every single week set for the public...

Case and point, week one Miami-3 vs FSU (i hope i dont jinx myself because i already bet this one and took miami) I totally think that is a spread made based on the public...

Sharps i think have already moved this line to 3.5 at some books!

Ps..I will be knocking every piece of wood in the house to eliminate the miami-3 jinx!!!

I know what you mean, but the article is only talking about the NFL.

... but to pick up on where you left off, and make a generalization, you can classify games into two categories:

1. National TV games
2. "Regular" games

There is NO WAY that the line is set with just sharps in mind for Monday Night Football - especially the first month of the season.

I was talking to my local last year and he said that he starts with 16-20 players (for the NFL) and he's down to 7 or 8 by the 5th or 6th week of the season because so many just get tapped out. He adjusts his lines accordingly and I assume the books do too.
