Wow! Frank Robinson doesn't mess around.

WASHINGTON -- Washington Nationals manager Frank Robinson thinks Rafael Palmeiro's statistics should be erased because the Baltimore Orioles slugger was suspended for a failed drug test.
"Where do you go back, stop and say, 'OK, when did he start using steroids?' To eliminate all that, and get the players' attention, you wipe the whole thing out," Robinson told MLB.com in a story posted on the Web site Tuesday night.

"Why put the burden on baseball to try and figure out where to go, and maybe put an asterisk? Just wipe the whole thing out."

Palmeiro was suspended Aug. 1, less than three weeks after he recorded his 3,000th hit to become one of four players in major league history with that many hits and at least 500 homers.

His 569 career homers entering Tuesday rank ninth in history.

Robinson, a member of the Hall of Fame, is sixth with 586 homers. He has been reluctant to discuss steroids.

Asked by MLB.com if he would wipe out Palmeiro's records, Robinson answered: "I would. He was found to have used steroids, and he served a 10-day suspension."

"I was surprised and taken aback that he was using steroids, because I never thought about him being a person that might be a steroids user," Robinson continued. "I always admired him for the way he went about his work, the way he performed on the field and the way he conducted himself off the field."

Ironically Raffy just passed F Robby in hits, RBI and was closing in on homers...

I would be very surprised to see him come back next yr.

"Frankly", I disagree with Frank. I know Frank is a "hard ass" but he needs to chill! Where would it all end if they start taking everything away from those who have"cheated"! Calm down Frank we know you were a great player. So Rafy and others have juiced a little, it does not make you a better player or hitter it just makes the ball go a little further when you hit it. The "juicers" will pay the ultimate price as they age! Depending on their individual usage the body will pay them in kind for juicing!

If the ball goes over the fence, than its making you much better.

Frank Robinson is as old school as they come...one of the most underrated great ballplayers of alltime.

Hard to believe Frank who player managed in 1975 and 76 would quit that close to 600 homers and 3000 hits...he could have hung around, being the first black manager was more important I suppose...

We're talking about 600 and 3000, only Mays and Aaron, Robinson isn't thought of in that company yet his numbers are almsot as great as those two.

Mays, Aaron, F Robinson, not much dfference but in public eye, huge difference.

I'd love to see him get a team to post season, he's been a great baseball man for 50 years now...would like to see Frank get in.

I bet Frank could come back right now and still reach those numbers...he is a savage.

The stats of the players in this steroids era are all a crock of shit.

agree, he has done an amazing job and stuck through under horrible circumstances, even the last couple years when they had no real home.

If Christian Guzman was not having one of the worst offensive statistical years in history, they could be waltzing into the playoffs

all i know is that frank has a little 40 something blond chick who meets him in different cities from time to time.

she also spends most of spring training around him.

how do i know this ?

he rented a condo from me 2 years ago for the spring and she came over to check it out and put a few things in the fridge.

i actually thought about taking a shot at putting something in her trunk on one her visits... she wasnt my type though.. decent looking but didnt really make my soldier march..

Steriods or not you still have to make contact with the ball. Last I checked steroids dont help your hand eye cordination. I'm sure Palmaro wouldn't have as many homers if he never took drugs but he wouldn't have that many less hits. And who cares anyways. Baseball isn't the same game now as it was years ago. There are countless differances in the game today. Better pitching, smaller parks, better athletes, better equipment, tighter wound balls, way smaller strike zones, pitchers pitch every 5th day insted of 4th day, and the list could go on and on. You can't really compair stats or records from years ago with those of today. I'll bet the home run record is broken 5 times in the next 30 years.

Although I agree in theory with Frank's position, it is impossible to start erasing stats, since we have no idea who did or didn't use steroids. Chances are pretty damn good that McGwire and Sosa used but i don't think its definitive. I suppose you could only erase the numbers of those who have been suspended for steroid use but that seems a bit arbitrary at this point.

I will say this in defense of guys getting bigger. When I played college baseball I was 18 years old had 7% body fat and weighed 190 lbs. After I graduated I still maintained about the same body fat but I weighed 213 lbs. I simply grew up. I went from a kid to an adult and with that comes more size. So I dont nessacarily think that just because a guy was skinny when he started his rookie season and now he's 40 lbs bigger that its because of steriods.

With that in mind I do think there is alot of steriod use in the majors but you cant say that just because a guy is bigger that its because of steroids.

but it does help with recovery and thus really could help 40 year olds like Raffy avoid injuries and accumulate stats
