First, thanks to the RX, Golden Nugget, Bucsfan, Wilhelm, Dante, Panther and the bash sponsors. They were very generous with their time and resources.
I had been to LV in February, and had passed up the bash in the past, but decided to give it a shot. (hoping it wouldn't be too hot) I flew out of Oakland, and if I had to fly out of SF airport I wouldn't have made the trip. I arrived Thursday afternoon. I had my name tag, but I sat in the GN sportsbook/lounge and never met anyone from the RX - very disappointing. I must have gone to that area 20 times over the course of the trip, with no results. I got dinner at the Main Street Station. Not as good as usual due to the steak not being up to par. I watch some pre-season NFL at the GN sportsbook, and then saw Freeride, a covers band that included a lot of classic disco in their act. I enjoyed them a lot. I wanted to put some points on the GN slot card, so I played VP and racked up 4,000 points. Friday I had lunch at Metro Pizza - great. Then I visited the Wynn - holy crap - that blows away the Bellagio or any other casino I've seen. Then I went to the Plaza downtown and played nickel VP. I was with a friend who is a serious Hold 'em player and he kept trying to get me to play. I'd never played cards at all, but somehow he talked me into it. I ended up playing about 5 hours of poker a night at the Nugget. I just loved it, although I lost a lot. I also played in the RX tourney and played ok. I think I went for about half an hour before getting knocked out on a hand where I was short stacked and got my money in on a strong hand. I met Stephen Nover, who played in the tourney. I was really glad to meet him, I've always enjoyed his insightful writing on the NFL especially. He pointed Fezzik out to me, and I went up and said hello, and told him how much I enjoyed him as guest host of the You Can Bet On It radio show. Then I was back for the dinner and reception, after a failed attempt to catch GI Joe play the Factor Of Fear blackjack hand, but unable to get info on where it was being held. I wish I could have met more posters, but there wasn't as much opportunity as I would have hoped. I did see Larry Grossman at the bash, and spoke to him briefly. I haven't missed too many episodes of his daily radio show over the years, and it was great to meet him. The drawings were way generous. I actually won the one where Panther put up 50 bucks out of pocket. Sunday I went to Ellis Island for the steak special. Their matchplay deal for blackjack seems too good to be true. If 2 people eat and are slot club members who can then each use a matchplay it seems to me that if they win one they get $20 back for $10, and if they win both they get $40. Is my math right? Sunday night I went to the Comedy Zone at the Plaza. The show wasn't good, but at least it was short. Monday I flew back after lunch at Lotus Of Siam. I don't know anything about Thai food, but I'd like to go there sometime for dinner and try their famous main dishes.
