MLB Hot Lines: Tuesday`s best bets
Covers.com staff

Tampa Bay at Boston - Devil Rays + 162
The good news keeps coming for Tampa Devil Rays backers.
Boston Red Sox outfielder Johnny Damon is listed as day-to-day after hurting his hand in the sixth inning of last night’s game. The injury is nothing serious but the AL batting leader will be out for the next several games while he nurses the hand.
“He was due for a day off anyway,” general manager Theo Epstein told the Boston Globe. “He`s beat up, he`s tired. This might be a good time to get him out.”
The other good news is Curt Schilling will be back on the mound. Last Thursday Schilling gave up six runs in five-innings as Boston lost to Kansas City 7-4 in the right-hander`s first start since recovering from an ankle injury. The Sox lost despite being pegged as –220 favorites.

Oakland at Los Angeles - A’s +109
The Oakland A’s might be down on players but they certainly haven`t been down on runs.
By the end of their game Sunday the A’s were down to just one position player on their bench after center fielder Mark Kotsay had to pull himself form the game with tightness in his back. The situation was so desparate manager Ken Macha jokingly asked Barry Zito if he could do a stint in the outfield.
Despite the injuries the A’s have won six in a row, most recently rocking Eric Bedard and the Baltimore Orioles 10-5 as +105 underdogs Monday. The win completed a sweep of Baltimore that saw Oakland score 36 runs in four games.
Now they throw arguably their best and most experienced pitcher, Zito, to the mound for Tuesday’s huge AL West showdown versus the Angels. Oakland is 8-2 in Zito’s last 10 starts and the former Cy Young award winner is 2-1 versus the Angels this season, giving up just four runs in 21-innings of work

Washington at Atlanta- over 7 1/2 runs
As meteorologists downgraded Katrina to a Tropical Storm overnight, oddsmakers felt compelled to do the same thing for the 9-run total set for Tuesday’s game between the Washington Nationals and the Atlanta Braves. Perhaps the weather was the reason or maybe bettors liked the extra day of rest starting pitchers Jorge Sosa and John Patterson enjoyed after last night’s game was cancelled. Whatever the reason, the total dropped 1 1/2 runs since the line opened Monday afternoon and now rests at 7 ½.
But the storm may has produced an interesting scenario tonight at Turner Field. The wind is forecasted to blow between 15 and 25 mph, south-southwest during the game, which is out to left-center field at Turner Field and when the wind has blown there this season the over/under is 3-0 with over nine runs scored per game.

St. Louis at Florida - over 8 1/2 runs
If Matt Morris wins tonight he will become the third Cardinals pitcher to win 15 games this season. That’s an impressive stat but Morris has had some help. The Cards are averaging over 6.2 runs when Morris starts this season.
The offense certainly helped Morris get the win Aug. 3 against the Florida Marlins. The Cardinals scored seven runs in the final two innings as the over cashed on an 8-run total in a 9-6 victory. Morris gave up four runs and nine hits in seven innings.
“Early on they seemed to be on every ball I threw,” Morris told reporters after the game. “Luckily I was in there until the seventh.”
The over/under is 8-2 in Morris’ last 10 starts.
