It seems any time there is a tragedy locally or globally, my fellow Tennesseeans step up.
from helping a little girls who lost her parents, to sending firefighters to the west, to food drives, to sending utility workers to devasted areas etc...

They are sending people away at relief donation sites for food and water due to the overwhelming response and lack of trucks to haul it, then guys start calling in donating their big rigs and pickupst o haul the water and food.
East Tennesse raised $900,000 and bought a fire truck to send to New York City within a month or two of September 11.

I have a friend who bought a generator,50 gallons of water and 30 gallons af gas, loaded his pickup on a wing and prayer to see if he could help, I called him yesterday and he told me he was in Birmingham by himself and what he was doing - the thing is - he is pretty sure he won't get through - but he wanted to try to help anybody.

Who are these people?

We truly are the Volunteer state and I am proud of it.

I am sure each of your communities are helping as well mine, but I have nothing to compare it to.

a little history on why we are the Volunteer state:

After the Declaration of Independence was signed (before we were a state- 16th state) , The call went out for volunteers to meet at Sycamore shoals in Sept of 1780 and march across the Smoky Mtns to meet the threat of the British. Over 1000 men showed up - almost all of the fighting age men in the area.

By the time of the War of 1812 the word was out about the type of men who lived in this area - Our University of TN was already founded by then (1794). The nation requested 3500 men from Tennessee, instead 25,000 men showed up and kicked ass in battles from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.
One of our favorite sons, Andrew Jackson, kicked ass in the battle of New Orleans with a grossly outnumbered army, many from Tennessee. One of his captains in the 2nd East Tennessee militia, Jacob Hartsell, was so inspired by his fellow Tennesseans that he wrote a poem titled "The Brave Volunteer" and our namesake was born.

20 years later, Tennesseans advanced their reputation as volunteers when, unsolicited, several hundred made there way to Texas to help them fight for their independence from Mexico, not to mention congressman Davey Crockett and his death at the Alamo in 1836.

10 years later Tennessee's status at the "Volunteer State" was solidified when the United States War Dept. called for volunteers for the war with Mexico. Tennessee's quota was for 2800 soldiers, over 30,000 showed up...

I am so proud to be born here and called a Tennessean, my family has been here sice the late 1700's when east tn was part of North Carolina.

The compassion I see here and around the country has been overwhelming to me

i am a fellow Tennesseean, i am hearing that 30 families will be coming to live in an abondened school about 3 miles up the road. if so, i am going to head a team to make sure everything possible is done for them... this info came from the local Frito Lay plant..

i own a store and today -- i am completely out of gas, i was told to not expect another delivery until tomorrow at the earliest...

Tennessee Baptist association left for hurricane areas late on monday, how is that for quick response...

i have many customers who want to help and im confident we will be doing all we can..

this is all of our disaster..

one of my friends whose name ends in "eaux" just told me that he will be housing people he doesn't even know in his condo. They are relatives of people they chartered a boat from last year out of Venice.

Knoxville is a long way from N.O. and this is as close as some can find shelter - unbelieveable

Volhound, Stinger,

how much is gas where you are?

I stocked up fully yesterday and got it for 2.69....Havent seen the local prices yet but what was going on in GA scared the shit out of me and i have to say even if the gas stations didnt have long lines, i saw about two or three people fully stocking up on gas and not just filling their tanks...One fella saw this, drove to a home depot about a block away and came back with 5 gallon gasoline drums to fill up!!!!

Texans are the ones to be truly applauded so far. Going to take a joint effort by all states to make this tragedy go away as quick as possible.

Volhound, I was not aware of Tennessee's history of voluntarism, that is laudable. One has to wonder what toll this took on Tennesseean lives fighting in battles that were not necessarily "theirs." It appears they always saw the big picture that an affront to any American is an affront to all of us.

On another note, I have been to New Orleans several times, and each time I heard about how the city sits below sea level. Each time I heard that, I thought (1) that is a marvel of civil engineering and (2) heaven help us if the sea ever gets over the banks.

I commend each of you who have already given of your time/$$/possessions/effort to help in this tragedy.
