New York Yankees at Seattle Mariners- Yankees –152
The fact that Ichiro Suzuki is fourth on the Seattle Mariners with just 15 jacks is sad. The fact that the player in fifth place has just three is even sadder.
All the recent talk of Ichiro’s power surge, in which he has hit six home runs in August, brings attention to one of the Mariners many problems this season.
They have trouble scoring runs.
The problem has been exacerbated over the last 10 games. The M’s are hitting just .214 over that stretch, booking just three wins.
Meanwhile, the New York Yankees are hitting .289 in their last 10 and have won eight of those games. New York has lived up to their Bronx Bomber billing this season with 186 long balls and 716 runs scored.
Oakland A’s at Los Angeles Angels- Angels –126
The A’s will have a tough time winning without Bobby Crosby.
When the young shortstop was on the disabled list earlier in the season Oakland went just 18-31. Now he`s on the 15-day DL again with a broken ankle.
Mark Kotsay is also expected to be out for three or four more days with back spasms. The A’s have scored 13 runs in three games without their center fielder and five of them came in extra innings Monday in Baltimore.
It may also be tough for Oakland pitcher Joe Kennedy to keep Los Angeles off the board. Kennedy is 0-6 with a 6.81 ERA in eight career games, including seven starts, against Los Angeles.
Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox- under 9 runs
The Detroit Tigers finally got a decent outing from a starter.
Mike Maroth threw seven strong innings, allowing just two earned runs as Detroit beat Cleveland 4-3 and the under cashed on a 9 ½-run total Wednesday.
The outing ended a streak that saw the Tigers give up 43 earned runs in just 24 1/3-combined innings. Not pretty.
But baseball is a game of streaks and maybe this is the start of a new one in Detroit.
Jason Johnson has put together two decent outings versus the White Sox this year, allowing a respectable seven earned runs in 13 2/3-innings of work. The under cashed in both games.
Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves- under 8 runs
The Atlanta Braves are just leaving too many runners on base.
They stranded 13 runners, including seven in scoring position, during Tuesday`s 3-2 loss to the Nats as -140 faves.
“We left way too many guys on,” manager Bobby Cox said of the loss that had the under cashing on a 7 ½-run total. “We`ve done a good job all season getting them in. [This time], we didn`t.”
Things didn’t improve a much in Wednesday’s doubleheader. Atlanta left 15 runners stranded as the under cashed in both games.
