I am going to the casino tonight. Going to be playing black jack and I was wondering if anyone could give me a crash course in how counting cards works? Thanks in advance. I understand I won't be able to learn in one day, I just want to get an understanding of how it works.

The system I learned, in a nutshell:

For every 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 you see on the table, count a +1.
For every 7, 8 and 9, count nothing (0).
For every ten, face card or ace, count -1.

If you have a high count late in the shoe (+9 for example), that means a lot of the good cards (faxes and aces) are coming, so up your bet.

I read a book on this method when I was in high school. My only problem is, that when there is a high count, that means the dealer also has a better chance of getting a good hand, like face-face. Nevertheless, that was the system I learned...

Without saying how do actually do it - I will say that counting cards takes a lot of practice to become adept at. Many counters start on their kitchen table counting down hundreds, if not thousands of decks before they venture into actual casino play. Maybe someone has a shortcut card counting system.

Good LUCK!!

Make sure you know the basic strategy first (go online and you will find it at good sites) such as what to do against a dealer 5 when you have a soft seventeen... The basics of strategy come first.

Card counting has a few variations. I never did it, but I understand it. You are just trying to count value 'ten' cards versus other values of cards to get an overall 'value' for the remaining deck. You are not really counting cards as much as giving a 'value' to the remaining cards in the shoe. Keeping a count of what has come out in a six deck game is not easy and they look for the telltale signs that people are doing it.... Anyway, when the situation arises that the deck is 'rich' or 'positive' with expected large value cards the player knows they have a better opportunity to receive twenty or BJ or high values. I'm no expert on card counting but that is a brief idea of what they do. In short...deciding general expectations for the remaining shoe to be large card or small card. tulsa

Thanks for the responses. By no means am I going to try and count cards tonight, but I just want to watch and see if I could do it. I am very good at math and numbers so I just want to see what kind of difficulty. I am going to use a small aces and 5's system tonight which is supposed to give you a 1/2% increase in your odds against the house. I know basic strategy and play BJ often, but I want to take my game to the next step.

A big benefit is getting 3-2 on naturals with plus count, and double-down situations are more in your favor.

Buy a basic strategy card and use it. Manage your money well. That is your best chance on short notice. Make sure your strategy is correct for the rules of the casino, and don't play games that have sucker odds.

Or you might get lucky and have the dealer tell you what to do:lolBIG: , believe it or not, the weekend in Vegas with the RX was the first time I ever played BlackJack, and a few of the other Rx member and myself were on a table with a dealer that gave us a heads up everytime we made the wrong call. It was great, we ALL were up money:party:
