Jerry Rice said he didn't want to play if he wasn't going to be at least the No. 3 receiver for the Denver Broncos. Informed that wasn't going to be the case, the NFL's all-time leading receiver opted to retire rather than ride the bench.

Rice, whose 22,895 career receiving yards are more than 8,000 more than his closest pursuer, is expected to officially announce his retirement from the NFL at a 1:30 p.m. ET press conference according to televised reports.
Rice survived Denver's cutdown to 53 players Saturday..

But his agent, Jim Steiner, said the NFL's all-time leading receiver had been notified by Broncos coach Mike Shanahan that he would not be their No. 3 receiver.

"That was a must for him," Steiner told The Associated Press on Sunday.

I kinda wonder if he really made the final roster. Shanahan didn't want to be the guy that cut Jerry Rice. I think it was a ploy to have Rice make the team and then decide to walk away on his own. (regardless of the training camp reports) Just my 2 cents.

There was some kind of falling out between the two when Rice was dropped to the 4th position on the roster. I believe that it has something to do with the likelihood of him being "deactivated" for a certain number of games-something that he was 100% against. That's the local story at least....

You stick to American Idol.

I am not saying he was not one of the greatest.

I am saying Shanahan brought Rice in to see if he could compete for the 3rd or 4th spot. He might of or might not of made the team....we will never know the exact truth. I know Shanahan was not going to cut him. I think it was an easy way out of a tight spot for all parties.

I guess I can stop ragging on him now.

What a stellar carrer the guy had, making several great memorys along the way.

His work ethic was 2nd to none. He is a shining example of hard work and dedication.

Did you know? Jerry Rice got his carrer started when he was cutting class. He was running from the principal, who could'nt believe Rice's blazing speed and reccomended that he play football. The rest is history.

He should have retired 3 years ago.

Maybe it's just me, but there's something sad about watching elites hang on too late.

Rice retires with 38 NFL records. To put it mildly - WOW. No doubt about it the greatest wideout to ever play the game...
