not just receiver, greatest player....

Is Jerry Rice the greatest football of all-time?

All his records are 30-35% above all other receivers :suomi:

Rice is great no doubt - but unless you actually saw Jim Brown play you cannot appreciate how great a football player he was. Jim Brown greatest athelete to ever play in the NFL.

Impossible to call him the greatest player of all time...but without a doubt the best WR ever.

A lot of great players that dominated their positions differently that don't stand out statistically like a wide receiver's stats. But without a doubt, he was amazing.

Read Paul Zimmermans article on Cnnsi.com .... he ranks the best receivers and lists (in no order) ..... Raymond Berry, Don Hutson, Rice & Alworth

The writeup on Hutson was some great stuff

I agree with Wilhelm ....

Brown was unbelievable and the best I've ever seen and that is not to take anything away from Rice ..... and another one of these sports debates that can go on forever

Agree. You can't really call Clemens the greatest baseball player of all time, or Roy the greatest hockey player. Greatest pitcher and goalie, maybe. But to compare Rice to say, Favre, and say Rice is better -- too subjective a comparison. Rice= G.WR.O.A.T.

It's difficult comparing eras, but Don Hutson has dominated the wide receiver position like no other player in history! Lead the league in receiving yards 8 times verse Rice 6 times, and touchdown catches 9 times verse Rice 6 times!!! In one season (41 or 42 can't remember) doubled both second place finisher in yards and tds 1211 to 571 and 17 TDS (non passing era) to 8!!!! Rice is awesome but has had two of the best Qbs (best two in my books) ever. Remember Young won the passing title without Rice!!!!

No comparison necessary when talking about greatest WR ever. Jerry Rice was above and beyond the rest.

Guy comes out of small school and blows up record books and has a hand full of superbowl rings.

Would have been better for him to have retire a couple years ago as a 49er, but his desire to play did not allow him to retire at top of his game.

Regardless, it will take a long time, if ever, to top many of his records.

It's always bothered me when people claim Rice is the best receiver ever. When I was a kid Don Hutson had almost the entire NFL record book. Then Jim Brown came along and rewrote the book. Jerry Rice is BY FAR the best receiver I've ever seen!!! I didn't see Don Hutson, but I think it's unfair to downgrade him just because he played a long time ago. Let's say they were the top 2 receivers ever. I saw most games Jim Brown played either on TV or in person, and I think he was the best NFL player I've seen since the early '50s.

Great hands

Interesting fact I heard about Rice growing up was that his old man used to haul a lot of bricks in his truck. Jerry and I believe his brother, used to throw thousands of bricks on a regular basis. He did say this helped him tremendously with catching the ball. I don't remember him ever muffing one...
