The Pirates are expected to announce this afternoon that Manager Lloyd McClendon has been fired, a source close to the team said.

McClendon, the team's manager since October 2000, was not expected at PNC Park today. Pete Mackanin, the Pirates bench coach, will manage the team for the rest of the season, the source said.

McClendon has never had a winning season in his five years at the helm. The Pirates are currently tied with the Colorado Rockies for the worst record in the National League.

I hope he at least has that base he threw into the dugout and stole.

He was a good manager getting the blame for problems that were not his own. I have seen many bad teams quit this season but Pittsburgh is not one of them. He also does a good job managing the bullpenn. He will have a better job shortly.

McClendon averaged 90 losses a season during his four years in Pittsburg. Sure he had no real salary to compete but other manages have done better under similar circumstances. Rumor has it that Jim Leyland wants to come back to The Pirates, not that he can make them contenders if they don't have any money to pay for better players.

As somebody that watched him manage day in day out for 5 years - terrible terrible manager. If you think his teams didn't quit late in the year, I suggest you take a look at his team's records in august and september. The most overrated manager in baseball (he's not decent, he's terrible). This guy would run the Cardinals into the ground. And he's an arrogant jackass on top of that. Good riddance.
