Already been 10 years since Cal Ripken broke the legendary Lou Gehrig's Ironman streak!

Do you remember where you were when Ripken broke the mark, as I recall he homered on both the game he tied the mark and the record breaker game, both vs California Angels...

I was living in Ocean City back then , having the time of my life, sunshone and summer beach fun daily...I remember Cal thanking only one player in his speech and that was Eddie Murray, he thanked Murray for teaching him so much about coming to work everyday ready to play and being professional...

I was never a huge Ripken fan and being from Maryland that was somewhat unusual .

Its hard to believe 10 more years have passed :howdy:

2632 straight ballgames when it was all said and done, Ripken quietly took a night off late in the season vs the New York Yankees, 500 games after he broke the record.

:lolBIG: This means a lot coming from a guy with an A's player in his avatar

Journey, tell us about the lights out to keep his streak alive and how he beats his wife and punk fans who don't have 5$ for his autograph, you were better at telling that.

I never could determine if that was a rumor or a true stroy, the rumor was Cal's wife had cheated on him and he slapped her around...it was running rampant in Baltimore , I never knew if it was just a rumor or not...

Cal would literally sign autographs for thousands nightly during that season, all free and sometimes for 3-4 hours after the game was over...

Cal Ripken

Hits 3,184
Homeruns 434
Doubles 603
RBI 1,700

1982 Rookie of the Year

AL MVP two times, playing shortstop at 6-5 and 235 lbs, back when it was unthinkable, he had the softest hands of any fielder in the game, he was also a very smart instinctive ballplaye..

He would call the pitches from his shortstop position (not many people realize that, Ripken would call pitches during the game.

At age 38 he batted .340

He hit 434 steroid free homers and played before the offensive numbers went off the charts, he also played in Memorial Stadium for teams built around pitching and defense, the Orioles won a lot of game 4-2 back in the day, his numbers were damn good when you look back.

The media overhyped his ironman streak, Cal was just a guy who loved to play baseball...One of the true legends in baseball history, not just for being a very good player, but the ambassador for baseball.

it was not his fault the media made him out to be larger than life.

They use to argue Ripken was not that good a shortstop, he once went 95 straight games without commiting an error at short (a record) he also led the league in chances and assist several times, yeah he wasn't as quick naturally at his size and weight, but he had an incredibly accurate arm and anything his glove got to stayed in it, I saw Ripken play daily, he was a damn good glove man....same with Billy Ripken, they both could pick it big time.

I never felt confident with the game on the line, with Cal at the plate though, he never seemed to strike fear into the other team, Eddie Murray carried those Orioles teams, Cal was just another batter.

I remember Cal more for his great defense actually...a very smart player, his arm it was like he knew just how much time he had, always throwing accurately to first just enough on it.

How do we know he wasn't on steroids? Why assume Sosa was on them and not Cal? Good to see that he took over for Tom Emansky and Fred McGriff on ESPN commercials.

We don't know 100% ..

Cal's career high is 34 homeruns , Sosa was hitting in the 60's for 3 yrs straight, could be a hint though, not to mention the size of Sosa's head tripled....

Cal's stats never jumped from 30 to 60 homers and 100 to 150 RBI, Cal hit 27 homers his rookie year and was pretty consistently hitting 25-30 homers for his career.

When the steroid policy was put into effect , Sosa became a 15 homer .240 avg. guy might be another hint, Sosa also caught corking his bat, may be another hint ...

There is no proof but, it sure looks pretty obvious which one was using.

Last week Ripken harshly criticized Raffy for looking guilty, I seriously doubt Ripken used steroids to attain his stats.
