Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons doesn’t seem concerned that his team can’t score.
“Nah, I`m not worried,” Gibbons told the Toronto Star after the Jays were shutout by the Baltimore Orioles and Daniel Cabrera Tuesday night 5-0.
Perhaps he should be. Toronto has dropped 13 of 18 games and is scoring just three runs per game during the streak. The over/under is 4-13-1 in those games.
Just to highlight how pathetic things have been for the Jays of late, Toronto is hitting only .211 in September and has scored just 17 runs in six games.
Houston at Philadelphia- Astros +140
Billy Wagner has done everything for the Philadelphia Phillies since he was acquired two seasons ago from the Houston Astros.
Everything but beat his former team.
Philadelphia has lost 11 straight games against Houston, including last night’s 2-1 loss as a +100 underdog, since Wagner joined the club before the 2004 season.
“The last team I wanted to lose to is Houston,” said Wagner who gave up the winning run in the ninth inning Tuesday. “I wanted to beat them more than anybody.”
Philadelphia puts Vicente Padilla on the mound Wednesday as a –160 favorite versus Brandon Backe and the Astros. Padilla is 0-4 in nine career appearances versus Houston with a 3-2 loss as a +172 underdog July 27 against the Astros this season.
San Francisco at Los Angeles-over 7 runs
How does a game involving Jeff Weaver get this kind of respect?
Sure the Dodgers hurler has put together a 13-9 record, up 4.41 units on a team that has lost 17.51 units total, but that record hides a very average 4.40 ERA.
Weaver’s mediocrity was demonstrated in an 11-3 loss on an 11-run total Friday versus the Colorado Rockies. The right-hander gave up six runs, including three home runs in just five innings of work.
“We had opportunities for this game to be different than it was,” said manager Jim Tracy. “We let it get away from us and that happened in the top of the first inning.”
It was the eighth time in Weaver`s last 10 starts that the over has cashed.
Chicago at St. Louis- Cubs +166
How can you not pull for Greg Maddux?
The future first-ballot Hall of Famer is 11-11 this season and has just five starts left earn 15 wins for the 18th consecutive season.
The offense has been helping out lately, scoring seven runs in two of the rightie’s last three starts. They also scored 11 runs as Maddux beat Mark Mulder and the Cardinals 11-4 as a +123 underdog Aug. 11.
