Was thinking about making this a project of mine. Really know nothing about it but would like to learn.

Any advice?

I haven't for many years, but it's a great way to learn about the inner workings and get to know the various components (or, depending on how quickly you catch on, it is a good way to make yourself want to break something).

I have, but it was a long time ago and I am a big geek.
Isn't very hard to do though, there are a ton of sites out there that show you how to do it I believe.

From what I understand your computer knowledge is just average, no offence it's same with me. You can go to Dell web site and built your computer there. At least pick all the parts you want in your PC and they will do it for you.

Go to Borders/barnes and noble, in the clearence section, will find a book abotu 6 inches thick, called PC repair/maintance, for like 6$. Read some of that, and consult it for any questions. Its not hard to do.

It's incredibly simple. Just make sure you get the proper power supply or you might see a little smoke ...

peteep: Easy, if you have any questions, I'll be more then happy to help you. First go to your local shop and purchase the components. Case comes with the power supply, Motherboard, CPU, Heatsink and fan, Harddrive, CD Rom or Writer, Floppy, Video Card, Modem, Memory, etc.

As mentioned above, any question feel free to ask.

PC Components are cheaper online
It's fairly easy to build if you can name the parts
Take your time the first time you do it
Its A HELL OF A LOT CHEAPER to build your own (if you want to use name brand parts)
If you're just a very very casual user, it's cheaper/more efficient to buy a Dell when they have a great deal with coupons/rebates

I built mine using this site:

http://www.buildeasypc.com/

It's amazing how much fluff there is out there pretending it's harder than it is.

Of key importance was that my motherboard (ASUS) came with a good manual which was intended for laymen.

The best reason to do it is that if anything goes wrong with any computer of yours in the future, you'll probably know what to do right away.

I have built my share of systems. To make the job easier...be sure to use top components. And this means the motherboard. It all starts with the foundation.

I prefer Abit and Asus is also very good. Whatever you do...do not use bargain components.

You can do it!

Kramer - good advice..
make sure you buy good components and keep track of all the warranties. That's the biggest reason to buy from a name brand, they will back their product for 1-3 years or whatever it is. If your built computer breaks down, you have to figure that crap out yourself and fight with the manufacturer for the warranty.
I save myself from all that hassle and just bought a Mac
