MLB Hot Lines: Wednesday`s best odds

Oakland Athletics at Cleveland Indians – under eight runs
If betting was easy, what would be the point? The only sure thing about this matchup is that it’s going to get heated. Oakland is 2 ½ games behind the Tribe in the Wild Card race and, not to get too dramatic, but it’s do or die time. Although the Indians have owned the A’s at the Jake this season, it’s too tough to call sides in this one – but the under looks good. Eight runs doesn’t give you a whole lot of breathing room, but considering Cleveland is hitting only .249 against lefties this season, you’ve got to think they’ll have a heck of a time getting a handle on Barry Zito’s superhuman curve. As for the A’s, they’ll have to deal with Jake Westbrook, who’s shut down the Oakland bats the last few times they’ve crossed paths. In two meetings this season, Westbrook has worked 14 innings, allowed six hits and just one run. His last five meetings with the A’s have played under.

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Devil Rays – Tampa Bay +150
The Yankees exorcised a few demons last night with an exclamation mark of a win over the pesky Devil Rays. But an old veteran had a warning that might as well apply to bettors and players alike.
"We`ve got to take this as one game," New York`s Bernie Williams said. "We`ve got to forget about what we did tonight and come out fresh tomorrow."
Bernie knows what he`s talking about. This wasn’t the first time the Yankees ran up the score and had a big win against these guys. The first meeting of the season resulted in 19-8 blowout, but then they turned around and lost four of the next five games. On June 21, the Bombers thought they had rediscovered their swing, only to drop the next three series to Tampa Bay. And now? Consider these stats: Mark Hendrickson has won all four of his starts against the Yankees this season for a total profit of more than 7 ½ units. Chien-Ming Wang is 0-3 against the Devil Rays, leaving backers nearly 6 ½ units in the hole.

Florida Marlins at Houston Astros – Houston –145
If there’s one thing we should have learned this year, it’s to never doubt Roger Clemens . He hasn’t earned a dime for supporters in his last six starts and he’s coming off an ugly loss to the Brewers. So is the 43-year-old fireballer finally over the hill?
Don’t bet on it.
If last season is any indication of how the old man’s arm holds up in the late summer, there’s nothing to worry about. The Astros went 6-0 in Clemens’ September starts in 2004, in large part because of his 2.62 ERA through that month. Bettors should be more concerned with the resiliency of A.J. Burnett ’s arm as he heads down the stretch. The 28-year-old has struggled with his control and racked up a 10.95 ERA in three straight losses, but his agent Derek Braunecker says it’s not his health that’s causing the problems.
``He`s battling some things right now mechanically, and I think it`s gotten into his head a little bit where it`s something he`s kind of fighting himself over,” Braunecker said.

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies – Phillies +115
Haven’t the bookies noticed the Braves are a different team on the road? Cory Lidle ’s not exactly a lights-out guy, but he should fare reasonably well against a Braves club that’s hitting only .236 on the road against right-handed pitchers. And if Lidle doesn’t last, it’s still O.K. The Phillies bullpen was the biggest factor in last night’s 5-4 win, in which four relievers pitched four scoreless innings. The combination of setup man Ugueth Urbina and Billy Wagner are probably one of the best one-two punches in baseball and although they’ve put in a lot of work lately, this Philadelphia relief corps adds serious value in any Phillies game.
Atlanta’s Horacio Ramirez has been solid, but in three starts against the Phillies this season, he’s gotten lit up to the tune of an 11.53 ERA. Philadelphia as home dogs will always give you good value, but a .299 batting average against lefties like Ramirez should add a little something extra.
