You baseball guys, have you ever seen that happen? it happened last nite in the red sox game. forty years of watching baseball i can't recall that happening. is that legal under the rules. i don't know.

TORONTO (AP) -- Boston's Gabe Kapler ruptured his left Achilles' tendon while rounding second base on Tony Graffanino's fifth-inning homer during Wednesday night's 5-3 win over Toronto.

Graffanino's ball went over the left-field wall, and Kapler fell to the ground. He got up on one knee but couldn't continue.

After a five-minute delay, Kapler was carted off the field. Alejandro Machado pinch ran starting at second base and finished circling the bases. <TABLE cellPadding=1 align=left border=0 hspace="10" vspace="5"><TBODY><TR><TD><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle>ADVERTISEMENT

I went to professional umpire school, and I don't have a clue. I think this is one of those situations that fall under "anything that is not covered in the rule book is subject to the discretion of the umpire." I would have said "screw it, we'll just count the run." Kind of funny to be the guy that has to pinch run a home-run trot.

so did Graffanino continue running the bases after Kapler went down, or did he wait at 2nd base until the pinch runner came out to finish Kapler's run?

Quite honestly, this is a big blow to the Red Sox, more than many or most people realize.

KAPLER was a nice role player and was able to relieve any of the starting OF'ers at times, but more importantly, he brings a level of coolness to the clubhouse with his easy disposition.

Fish, it won't matter in the least. The WS was already on schedule to be Cardinals 4, Red Sox 0. Sweet revenge.

Graffinino smartly waited at second, as there is a rule about passing a runner. It was wild--nobody knew what to do there for a while, and I did think for a minute that they were going to make someone carry Kapler around the bases. I half expected the Jays to run an appeal play, but they did not.

You don't seem to understand, last year was the RED SOX's revenge for the 1967 WS.
