The CENTER is the most important position of an NFL offensive line overall.

They are the "QB" of the offensive line and is actually far and away the most important offensive lineman.

Now of course, if you have a bonafide STUD at left tackle and a so-so center, than obviously losing your left tackle is huge and probably greater.

But to answer your question in general overall terms, the CENTER is the glue to the offensive line and the most important.

If your a stout passing team with a right-handed QB, obviously your LEFT TACKLE is very important and OVERALL would rate that the #2 position on the OL behind the Center position.

Now take a look at a team like Green Bay.........they lost two all-pro GUARDS and it is going to hurt them tremendously.

Why?

The Packers have long been known for their great screen passes.........in which good GUARDS are essential to be successful. As a Packer fan, I am also worried about the Packers being able to play smashmouth football up the gut with Ahman Green too without the talented guards on hand.

No doubt about it, the center position.

IMO the center being out, is a huge risk to bet on a team with a back-up center starting the game...We don't hear much talk about this....

The year the PACKERS won the SuperBowl, Brett Favre made a statement that C FRANK WINTERS was the teams MVP, just to give another indication of how important this position is.

Packers haven't run NEARLY as many screens in the past 3 years as many people think. Not even close. Anytime any team loses 2 all pro guards, it hurts tremendously, not necessarily from a playcalling perspective, but look at it this way... You have an irreplaceable immobile 36 year old quarterback you are paying $10,000,000 a year. You take 40% of his protection away, and replace them with very inexpensive, inexperienced, marginally talented turds. Guess what's gonna happen? That's right. I hate to say it, but I guarantee Favre misses at least 1 start this year due to injury. I don't care if the guy is Superman, he can only take so much.

Favre may surprise you, never count him out.

But losing two all-pro guards PLUS what is perhaps a top five receiver in the league(Walker), and you have serious holes to fill and pick-up the slack for.

Every great offensive line, has had a great center. My vote for the best center of all time is Mike Webster.
