Interesting how the polls work. Michigan loses at home to Notre Dame and yet, is ranked higher. In turn, Notre Dame loses at home to Michigan State, yet is ranked ahead of the Spartens. Iowa is ranked ahead of Iowa State, although the Cyclones whipped the Hawks in Ames. So much of the early season rankings are based on expectations from the off-season, instead of actual results on the field.

USC%20-%20Tom%20Malone%20HB.gif
1. USC
(2-0)
W, Arkansas 70-17
next game: at Oregon
Either Arkansas really stinks or USC is going to be unstoppable all year long. Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and the receiving corps all look in total command. The offensive line deserves a lot of credit over the first two games. Going into hostile Autzen Stadium this week will be the real test.

2. LSU (1-0)
Didn’t play this week
next game: Tennessee
Is it possible for a big-name team to start out with two tougher games than at Arizona State and Tennessee? With two weeks off to prepare, this is where the Tigers have to make their statement that they intend to challenge Texas for the number two spot in all the polls.

3. Texas (3-0)
W, Rice 51-10
next game: at Missouri (Oct. 1)
Texas might be looking fantastic beating up on poor Rice, but it has a mega-landmine ahead at Missouri. The Longhorns won’t want to be looking ahead to Oklahoma three weeks down the road, but it’ll be hard not to.

4. Florida (3-0)
W, Tennessee 16-7

next game: at Kentucky
It wasn’t like Florida’s offense ran all that smoothly against the Tennessee defense, but it got the job done. The Gator defense hasn’t received nearly enough credit so far.

5. Ohio State (2-1)
W, San Diego State 27-6
next game: Iowa
After allowing an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play, Ohio State’s defense held San Diego State to under 100 yards of total offense with three, three first downs for the game. The Buckeye running game should’ve been able to do more.

6. Georgia (3-0)
W, UL Monroe 44-7
next game: at Mississippi State
The jury is still out on the Bulldogs considering how much they struggled against South Carolina and how easily Alabama ripped apart Spurrier’s boys. We still might not know just how good this team is until October 8th at Tennessee.

7. Virginia Tech (3-0)
W, Ohio 45-0
next game:
Georgia Tech
It’s time for a new test. Obliterating Duke and Ohio isn’t without its charm, but this is still a team in need of a really, really big win to get the true national respect it deserves. That might come against the Yellow Jackets this week.

8. Arizona State (2-1)
W, Northwestern 52-21
next game: at Oregon State
Is anyone noticing that Sam Keller just might be one of the three best quarterbacks in college football right now? The Sun Devils destroyed Northwestern with the ground game as well as the pass. This is the only Pac 10 team that might be able to hang punch for punch with USC.

9. Tennessee (1-1)
L, Florida 16-7
next game:
at LSU
The Vols should probably drop further after a second straight bizarre and uneven performance. Even for a second, did it seem like they had a chance to beat Florida? The quarterback situation has to be settled right now or it’s going to be an even bigger distraction as the year goes on. Put them back in the top six if they beat LSU this week.

10. Florida State (3-0)
W, at Boston College 28-17
next game: Syracuse (Oct. 1)
The Noles couldn’t pass against Miami and couldn’t run against Boston College. Who cares? 3-0 is 3-0. Somewhat quietly, Drew Weatherford might have become the quarterback FSU is looking for after playing well, or at least better, against the Eagles.

11. Miami (1-1)
W, at Clemson 36-30 3OT
next game: Colorado
If only the offensive line could pass protect, we’d really get to see what the offense can do. There’s still a sense that this will grow into the ACC’s best team, but there needs to be more consistency on defense and much, much better play from the offensive line.

12. Georgia Tech (3-0)
W, Connecticut 28-13
next game: at Virginia Tech
Oh yeah, Georgia Tech. Sort of the forgotten team in the ACC race, at least at the moment, it needs Reggie Ball to get healthy and be the leader of the attack. The defense will get better and better as the year goes on, while the running game will be one of the ACC’s best. A win at Virginia Tech would merit top five consideration.

13. Auburn (2-1)
W, Ball State 63-6
next game: Western Kentucky
Don’t fall asleep on the Tigers. They’re just finishing up their cupcakes (Western Kentucky?!) and are getting finely-tuned. QB Brandon Cox has been razor sharp over the last two games.

14. Boston College (2-1)
L, Florida State 28-17
next game: at Clemson
The Eagles have to get over the rough home loss to Florida State right now, or it’ll lose at Clemson this week and really be out of the ACC hunt. If they play like they did in the first half against the Noles, they’ll get back on track.

15. Michigan State (3-0)
W, Notre Dame 44-41 OT
next game: at Illinois
O.K. Michigan State, everyone respects you now and considers you a Big Ten title contender. Now don’t be all Michigan Statey and follow up a brilliant win over Notre Dame with an inexplicable clunker against Illinois.

16. Notre Dame (2-1)
L, Michigan State 44-41 OT
next game: at Washington
Yeah, it stinks to lose to Michigan State, but if you’re a Notre Dame fan, you have to love, love, love the attitude of Charlie Weis and the coaching staff that a loss is a loss and nothing else is acceptable.

17. Purdue (2-0)
W, Arizona 31-24
next game: at Minnesota

Purdue hasn’t exactly looked like a sleeper pick for a BCS slot, but winning at Arizona is a little more impressive than it appears. A win at Minnesota would vault the Boilermakers up the charts.

18. Michigan (2-1)
W, Eastern Michigan 55-0

next game: at Wisconsin
After the ugly performance at Notre Dame, a 55-0 whacking of Eastern Michigan is a nice cleanser before the rough road trip to Wisconsin. With at Michigan State coming up the following week, the Wolverines have to come out of Madison with the win.

19. Minnesota (3-0)
W, Florida Atlantic 46-7
next game: Purdue
Minnesota blew through its first three games with ease. Now things get interesting playing a Purdue team ranked just outside the top ten in most polls. In other words, this is a statement game for the Gophers.

20. Clemson (2-1)
L, Miami 36-30 3OT
next game: Boston College
The team, coaching staff and fans all looked completely and totally drained after the loss to Miami. They need to get it back in big-time hurry or risk being tagged by a Boston College team in need of an ACC win.

21. UCLA (3-0)
W, Oklahoma 41-24
next game: Washington (Oct. 1)
Oklahoma might stink right now, but it’s still a win over Oklahoma. It was the sort of impressive game that makes fans happy, and also sets expectations up higher.

22. Alabama (3-0)
W, at South Carolina 37-14
next game: Arkansas
Whoah. Now that was an impressive performance. The running game steamrolled over the South Carolina defense, while the defense kept the Gamecocks from getting anything rolling. The Arkansas game has to be a win before the Florida showdown.

23. Iowa State (2-0)
Didn’t play this week
next game:
at Army
The Cyclones got a week off to bask in the glow of the Iowa win, and now they get another week off playing Army. If Nebraska continues to play poorly, Iowa State can realistically hope for 5-0 going into the road trip at Missouri. Win that game, and 7-0 is likely before going to Texas A&M.

24. California (3-0)
W, Illinois 35-20
next game: at New Mexico State
The Bears are banged up and in need of a week off to get all the offensive starters healthy. Fortunately, New Mexico State is up next on Friday giving the team an extra day to prepare for Arizona.

25. Iowa (2-1)
W, Northern Iowa 45-21
next game: at Ohio State
We all know Iowa can obliterate bad teams. Now it needs to show it can play with the good one. Yes, Ohio State is a good one.

Thanks, Fish. These rankings, in my opinion, more clearly reflect the season so far.
