Good arm, athleticism, and most important, strong decision making..

The NFL is about ball control..You turn the ball over, you cant win..

Height does seem over the past 40 years with a few exceptions to be essential.

GREAT FEET

STRONG ARM

ACCURACY

POCKET POISE

Enough mobility to CHANGE your throw

Can your QB run or sneak for one yard

PLAY Action FAKES

OH and most Important SMART!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pocket presence is a very underrated ability. Brady is the absolute best of all time at it IMO. He just glides around in the pocket as he feels the rush coming. Marino and Montana also were very good at it - most of the great ones are.

good stuff...I think a more mobile QB that is accurate is better then a strong armed pocket passer in this league in this day....

arm strength
poise, decisionmaking, instincts and intelligence
pocket presence
accuracy
size and athleticism
leadership

all of the above.

Hard to say it's one or the other. But obviously you need a strong and accurate arm. You gotta start with that. Much of the rest can be taught.

A Superbowl win and a good running game. Then a good offensive line and a good defense.

To be a HALL OF FAME QB you need the things above and what has been mentioned, unless you are Marino, Fouts, or Moon, then all you need are stats and longevity.

A kick-ass offensive line, running game, and strong decision making. A qb can get around physical shortcomings. See how long Flutie has been in the league.

Jasin as I was writing that his name is the one that popped into my head. But for all intent and purposes what is the difference between Trent Dilfer and Phil Simms when it comes to actual talent?

I think Dilfer is a better than average QB, probably not great. But IMO neither was Phil Simms. But they did what they needed to do to win. Look at all the other QBs that were shit somewhere then got into the right spot and flourished. Or all theones that were "great" for a season or two then were moved or went free agent and went somehwere and sucked.
So having those things really doesn't make one great either, it just helps the ones that are good that have some flash to be reclassified.

There are very few great stand alone QBs. More than anything longevity and consistancy are what really sperates the greats from the very goods.

Those two traits are probaly the more "true" answer. But they need the others mentioned to atain those two things.

two things

1. know how to score and run a 2 min offense, those critical points at the end of the half or the game. Some can, some cant (like Daunte)

2. Take care of the football in your own territory, no fumbles, not INTs

If you excell in those two it does not matter how big, tall, heavy, fast, slow, smart, experienced, etc. You can win Super Bowls with just the above if you have talent around you.
