Build your house on a cliff overlooking the CA coastline, expect it to fall eventually, for example !
Just my opinion ! A price exists for that CA view. A price exists for that great Florida weather, and beachfront property. The keys are awesome, but are in prime hurricane zone. You know that going in !

i agree. and, the federal govt will continue to bail out these cities/citizens as disasters strike. these disasters have stuck in the past and they will continue to strike in the future. as long as people build homes and buildings on the edges of the ocean, there will be loss of life and of property. and since the federal govt keeps bailing them out, it is you and me who pay the bill.
on another note :
just saw an interview with a lady who is traveling with her husband, child and her parents. evacuating in texas .
they were on the road 24 hours .
she says they havent eaten in 24 hours.. didnt you pack something ????
a storm comes and everybody becomes an idiot ... or maybe they were idiots to begin with and just now being exposed...
i'm waiting for someone to come on and say people are starving out here on these highways . they have no food or water ..
