I guess I don't have a long-drama filled post to write as I just went over it with my girlfriend (who is, thank the lord, staying with me), but I basically, no, I DO, have a gambling addiction. It's affected all aspects of my life, and it's time for me to get out while I'm still young (24). I'm in major debt and basically screwed all around. I've yet to talk to my father, a phone call that I dread. He is a doctor, yet manages to keep his gambling to quarter games of poker.

I'm going to my first GA meeting tonight, and I'm not here to preach or to necessarily say goodbye, though it is goodbye from betting. I just wanted to thank everyone at the RX, still one of my all time favorite websites, for all the good times.

I'm a scientific man though, so if you have any questions or thoughts, I'd be glad to hear/answer them.

That is all.

FSB....stay well man....It is a shame that you can not just gamble for recreation and entertainment...it does not have to be a day in and day out action jackson thing with you betting 30 games a day . I have managed to keep it a hobby and I love it

IMHO, I think the gambling problem requiring GA intervention starts when someone tries to actually make a Living at it on a day in and day out basis . they lose HUGE bets that they cannot afford to lose and chase and then your not able to even take a 1 day break, from there you snowball in the pit of dispair where you are depressed around the house maybe even getting mad at your family...its a ugly site and extremely sad to see happen to someone....

best of luck FSB

My advice to people is if you cannot consider the bet you just made as LOST money and feel comfortable with losing it...DO NOT BET IT and seek help

ouch yeah man sorry to hear that. I went to one of those because when I got into deep shit that one time I had to ask my parent for money to pay the bookie she forced me to go to one of those. I looked at the people and was like holy shit these people are worst than me. I didn't thikn I had a problem, i mean some of these guys/girls had issues like one girl couldn't stop buying lottery and her life was a mess when she goes to the store that has a machine. however, most of the people there were addicted to horse racing, only one other guy who oddly enough was in for the same thing and the exact same reason. I went to one and never returned. HAHA see how much it has helped me ;) I hope GA helps you out man seriously.

This is what I was trying to do Dante (make a living). The last thing I would do is come in here and say that everyone will fail at gambling recreationally because I have failed at controlling my own actions.

I just was trying to live off of my gambling, and its caught up to me.

I would like to say however if there are lurkers who are in a situation more like me, feel free to make this thread your home, too.

And chan, yeah I get a feeling that I'll see the people at GA will be in "worse" shape than me. After all i'm a kid with a well off father, and I didnt even lose my relationship over this. She's willing to support me and its the only reason I got out of bed today, lol. But I have to swallow my pride, because I'm sure I have a lot to learn from the people who are there.

espn doesnt show the dark side of gambling, they show the 5 million dollar winner and glamorize these poker players so now kids are gambling at an alarming rate.

I heard about a kid age 12 who wanted a poker table for his birthday.

Gambling is an addictive behavior that will eventually beat most people

it will beat you if you cannot control yourself and we RARELY hear about those on the forums that go Tilt and lose everything in one weekend or cannot control themselves playing at online casinos and lose 1000's a day , for example

..those things never get talked about people either go into huge holes trying to recover or disappear from the forums

Ridiculous, broad stroke assertion.

Show me ANY data that shows that EVERYONE who gambles is broken by gambling. I would agree that the majority lose, but that is nothing close to being broken by gambling. What about the huge group of people that gamble a few times a year or just for fun during NFL and do not bet over their head....not to mention those that actually turn a profit....I know many of both.

One example is my grandfather who bought his first house with his winnings from playing poker overseas during the War and then played the ponies and poker for a little bit of fun when he was retired. Smart guy, incredible discipline and never drank a drop. Just b/c some can't handle it by no means justifies your outlandish claim.

Sorry to hijack your thread FSB, I do wish you good luck.

Overview: Results from applying regression analysis to U.S. bankruptcy data for 1990 and 1999 indicate that counties that legalized casinos during the period suffered individual bankruptcy rates more than 100 percent higher than counties that remained "casinoless." On the other hand, the casino counties experienced business bankruptcy rates that were 35.4 percent less than their matching counties without casinos.

just do a google search for gambling and bankruptcy or gambling and poverty or shit gambling and anything, and you will find devastation galore.

that sounds like a motto of bad gamblers...

Gambling beats good gamblers every single day!!!!

Thats why good gamblers only seeka 53% rate of wins!!! They are beaten
by gambling the for the other 47% of the time!!!

If one doesnt grasp that, then they would believe the above false notion!!!

I agree that there are many who can't handle it, but your theory that EVERYONE gets beat has no room for the card counters, sports sharps and excellent poker players like my grandfather. It may be your experience, but when you apply it to the universe you are making a ridiculous, broad stroke assertion.

This has no relevance....you said there was overwhelming data to support that EVERYONE gets beat, not that more people go bankrupt in areas with casinos?
