Me and a couple of friends from here in England are coming over in a few weeks. We're flying into Austin, hiring a car there then going down to San Antonio, watching the Saints play the Falcons, then going to Big Bend National Park and El Paso, then into New Mexico to Sante Fe and Taos, before driving back to Austin.

Any suggestions on what to do, where to go?

I also posted this across the street (it is getting confusing how many streets there are to cross), but am impatient for a reply. And therx posters do have a history of being aquiescent to these kinds of questions.

go watch all the illegals walk into the US since we do not have enough border patrol agents!

Be very careful if you go to Juarez while in El Paso. Lots of partying there, but also very dangerous.

Thanks DAWOOFDADDY. We are planning on staying in El Paso and then walking across the bridge into Mexico. I've been to Tijuana before and would like to see somewhere a little nicer...

Route 40 going toward Albuquerque, New Mex has some nice scenary. Try doing a search on Continental Divide and New Mexico, there are a lot of parks and trails if you like that, or just drive over the Divide, the elevation is about 7,000 feet and you have nice views going and coming from there.

If you see Truth or Consequences on a NM map don't waste any time with that unless you want a picture standing next to a highway sign that says Truth or Consequences. If you need one, let me send you mine.

NM has sometimes wild weather especially late in the day if you drive that old Route 66 you should see some awesome sunsets , weird colored cloud formations, maybe a violent thunderstorm or wind storm kick up out of nowhere.

As far as Texas, downtown Dallas is boring that's all I have.

Do not go to Mexico. Take it from me love to party there but this is not the time. Safer in Iraq than the US Mexican border at this time. Not many Police and the one that are there are more worried they will be killed and won't help you. Just somthing you dont want to do. Also bring you some sun screen and be ready to tell all your friends how damn hot it is in Texas. Best thing to do is stay in San Antonio. Great town with lots to do. If you want to cool off hop on I-10 west and goto Sam MARCUS NICE COOL RIVER TO FLOAT THERE. But do not goto Mexico. Last year I would have said hey why don't you go to Mexico great partys this year no way. Yes Big Bend is a great place to watch future yard men enter the US with no hassle at all. Other places in Texas Austin visit 6th street ifyou like to drink. Houston Richmond Ave is ok lots of bars and Downtown has gotten better I find Houston boring but live here. Austin good party town this time of year because college is in. Good luck have fun.. But beware of the Border towns. I will watch your post so ifyou have any question just ask.

This is the funniest thing I have ever read.

If you wan to see somthing nicer you will have to stay in Mexico and walk across to the US side. Those border towns are all the same sh!t holes. Just different location. Remember the police are scared so should you be if you go there right now. I think the last count was like 163 missing people have been killed or kidnaped. They like to pour gas on you and see how far you can run while they shoot at you. If you like that game have a great time over there. Remember I used to go thre on Bussiness 6-7 or time a month. Seen some bad sh!t over there that is why I am making a big deal out of it. If I havent seen it myself I probably wouldnt say not to go.

Juarez isn't any nicer, but if you just want to say you went to Mexico and see it there isn't much danger walking across during the day. There are tons of police in the areas any gringos would walk into because the government is very fearful there will stop coming across. Just don't go at night unless you are under 21 and really want to drink or really need to go get a hooker.

El Paso is safer, but oh my could a town be any more boring? I arrived on a bus from the interior of Mexico and crossed into El Paso. I thought the bus would get there at noon and I had a 5pm flight, but it was 6:45am and I figured why not rent a car, never seen the area. I drove all around El Paso, saw what 3 or 4 sites it has, went to Las Cruces, about 50 miles away, came back, drove around some more, and still had 2 hours left. Literally I saw everything in the two cities anyone would want to see in 8 hours! Unless you like to shop at Walmart or go see the Border Patrol museum there is zilch to see. The highlights of the area are some pretty damn good places to eat, but if you are coming from other parts of Texas it won't be that special.

Austin is one of the best college towns in the country-you really don't need to leave there. I don't know what to say about San Antonio, but you'll see your share of textbook "Texas hicks".

The drive across west Texas to Santa Fe will be um, boring-really boring. Santa Fe is a somewhat rough city-I wouldn't be stopping in da hood if that's where you end up. Taos is a winter resort town that is several thousand feet higher than the rest of what you've mentioned. It will be colder, but will also contain a lot of vegetation (you'll understand after the drive to S. Fe). The trees should be turning, or at least starting to, so it should be a beautiful drive.

I'd suggest flying from San Antonio to Sante Fe--You're talking about 12-18 hours of HELL on that drive.
