Dear Uncle Festus,

I received a fair quality (as I understand) bottle of bourbon whiskey by the name of Knob Creek.

I tried it neat.

I tried it with a splash of water.

I tried it with two ice cubes.

It seared the back of my throat. It burned my tummy. I am no puss, mind you, but you'll have to trust me on that.

Should I just barely sip it as I usually take large amounts when I swallow any beverage. Is bourbon just 'bad' or should I try drinking it in a particular way?

Help me.

Knob Creek is 100 Proof (50% alc) and very strong but it should be smooth. Actually supposed to be very good stuff...

PS. I'm sober myself and have never tried the stuff back in my drinking days..

Bourbon is one of the few alcohols I never could acquire a taste for. If you are the same way, maybe you could trade bottles with someone for some stuff you enjoy.

Go with half water, half bourbon and see if that dilutes it enough to make it palatable.

I may be showing my age here -- but why not try a Bourbon Manhattan.

  • 2 1/4 parts Knob Creek Bourbon
  • 3/4 parts sweet vermouth
  • Dash Angostura bitters
  • 3 or 4 ice cubes
  • Maraschino cherry
Combine the Knob Creek Bourbon, vermouth, dash of bitters, and ice cubes in a shaker and stir well. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with the cherry.

It's actually good and brings back memories of so long ago.

Cigar and Ice.

If you can't handle it, put in a box and send it to me.

My favorite way of drinking bourbon (other than on the rocks) is in a drink called an Old Fashioned:

3 dashes bitters
1 tsp water
1 sugar cube
3 oz bourbon whiskey
1 slice orange
1 maraschino cherry

In an old-fashioned glass, muddle the bitters and water into the sugar cube, using the back of a teaspoon. Almost fill the glass with ice cubes and add the bourbon. Garnish with the orange slice and the cherry. Serve with a swizzle stick.

Wil, I'll try that. I still didn't like it mixed with cold spring water, on the halves. I'll have to get the ingredients tomorrow.

Jarbo, you'll hate me, but it's not a huge bottle 750 ml and AT WORST I'll mix it with coca-cola. Sorry if I have to do that. I don't think I'm cut out for bourbon, though. I like Copenhagen snuff occassionally and strong tobacco's for smoking, even though I don't smoke often. Bourbon seems to be too astringent for me, but I'll give wilheim's fondly remembered drink a try tomorrow before I go the trailer trash route and mix it with coke. LOL! tulsa

Old Fashioned - ah yes - I remember them well, I must have mixed 1000 of em in my old bartendering days. Sampled a few also.

Sam, I enjoy the blended whiskeys. I am afraid that although I deny being a big ol' puss, when it comes to bourbon I may be a big ol' puss.

It sounds as though you like the bourbon. I wish I could John Wayne up and enjoy it, too. I'm going to have to sweeten it up a bit like Wil's or QLeap's recipes.

It's OK. I really dont care for the big $$ bourbon, Jim Beam on the rocks is just fine. I prefer Scotch!:toast: Cutty Sark is good but Dewars is better!:drink:

That's not Scotch, that's dish water.

Single malt scotch is teh only way to go Macallen, Grendronoch to name a couple.

Tulsa - might want to stick with Black Velvet or maybe jusy good old beer!
