My uncle Jack opened up an Italian restaurant/catering business about 7 or 8 years ago here in a small subdivision of Ottawa. Jack is a Chef who has some culinary training so his restaurant became extremly successful & has since become the highest ranking Italian restaurant in our city.

2 years ago an old High school friend of Jacks moved back to the city after having made a fortune on wall street in New York. Having had a bit of experience in the restaurant business himself, Jack's old high scool friend 'Bob' offers Jack a substantial amount of money to buy his Business. More than enough money for Jack to retire on. It is more of a hanshake deal than anything as the two are old friends. Jack agrees to continue to work at the restaurant as head chef & Bob owns & operates the restaurant/business from the background.

One day, on his way to work, Jack drives beside an empty lot for lease which happens to be right next to a new sub division.... Jack thinks to himself, woudnt that be a great place for a restaurant.... 2 months after that Jack announces to Bob that he is leaving the restaurant & the business he built to open another restaurant down the street. An Italian Restaurant, in the exact same district as his initial restaurant which he sold. He takes the millions he received in the sale of the initial restaurant & opens his new restaurant. He then proceeds to send a special invation to all his old clients from the old restaurant & all his old catering customers for a Grand Opening party at his new restaurant. You see before Jack left the restaurant he downloaded the business database & had access to all his previous customers personal information. Jack uses this new information to drive people & business to his new restaurant announcing tha HE, who afterall was the CHEF as moved to the new restaurant.

Bob feels hurt of course as he is not sure if all this will affect his business & what the future will hold. He feels betrayed, but many people say that "business is business".....

it seems to boil down to a question of Ethics.

what do yall make of this situation? ever seen anything like it?

"Jack" made a legal business decision. No problem with advertising. It's up to "Bob" to not only keep current customers but also attract new ones. "Bob" better find a competitive advantage and roll with it. Simply serving food isn't enough these days.

The restaurant business is very tough.

I am personally way too ethical to ever pull a Shrink like asshole move like that. He is the one that has to live with himself though.

I did not read the entire thread about "stealing" of RX members but I don't think he did anything wrong.....I once worked for a telemarketing company and went to go start a telemarketing co. w/ a couple of other guys and we took a copy of all the scripts etc......
