DIA employees caught using airport computers for fantasy football
written by: Paula Woodward 9Wants to Know Reporter

DENVER - The e-mail from the computer technology department at DIA doesn't mince words. "Some 30,000 attempts were logged from the operations groups you manage just on September 18th."

It went on to say, "After investigating, we have found it to be fantasy football related." The e-mail was obtained by 9News. The fantasy football use at work affected computer firewalls and the Internet bandwidth for DIA computers.

DIA PR Director Sally Covington says "It never impacted safety of the airfield. It never impacted operations. It never impacted life or safety issues." But according to the e-mail sent by the airport's computer department, "This type of traffic really is not business related and ... is causing problems such as keeping NCAR from accessing weather information at DIA."

On Sunday, September 18th, during a 24-hour period, 30,000 attempts were made to log on to a fantasy football site by DIA employees at work using airport computers. The offenders were from the DIA Operations Department, which handles the operation and communications of the airport.

"They dispatch police and fire, they monitor all the closed circuit TV cameras," said Chuck Cannon, DIA assistant manager of public relations. "They check on the weather. They answer operations calls, they oversee the operation of the airport."

The peak log on times were the same as game times...11:00a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The fantasy football sites are now blocked.
