"Illinois is the best team I have seen in a long, long time. Not necessarily the best individuals, but the best team."

John Wooden
Greatest basketball coach of all time

I got the quote from Bruce Weber's book on the season, which I bought today. I'm sure I'll finish it this weekend. It's just too bad that it has a sad ending. It sure was a fun season though, and being at the Arizona game was one of the greatest moments of my life.

When UCLA won their last Championship in Seattle, I was flying back from Seattle on Alaska Air and John Wooden was on the same flight. I got to talk to him and He is quite the Man ! It had to be one of the highlights of my life !

Wooden is the greatest person alive today. Read everything about him that you can. He is 95 and can recite thousands of poems and inspirational sayings. He loathes the olympics(too comercial and political). His favorite college coach of the last twenty years is Tark. He is no longer involved with the Wooden Award because the LA athletic club tried to control his name.

Kermit,

I truly envy you. I obviously am too young to have ever seen Wooden coach, however he is one of my favorite basketball people. I have always enjoyed listening to his thoughts and opinions on certain subjects. I always love his interviews. He has a great basketball mind and is a great person. Would have loved to be able to talk to him for a little while. You are very lucky!

Hope all is well Kermit.

Couldnt agree with you more. By any chance, have you read any books about him? I would be very interested in reading about him. He truly is a great person.

SB, Good to hear from you ! Yes, everything is going great with me and my wife. We are just getting ready to go on vacation next week to Sedona, Ariz, Prescott etc. Hope all is well with you. Yes, John Wooden is a great man and the greatest basketball coach of all time... and He didn't have to throw chairs etc. to get his players to perform in a classy manner. He won his 1 st Championship with a 6foot 5 inch center and a team that wasn't even rated to start the season. In his later years, all the great players wanted to play for UCLA under his coaching. I must say that He was willing to talk to me just like We were friends for years. Of course We were talking about basketball and UCLA had just won the NCAA Championship. He was in a great mood ! :lolBIG: See you next year at the Bash ! GL in all you handicapping endeavers

Amen! It is and almost certainly will remain the greatest game I've ever witnessed. I honestly think it probably was the greatest NCAA hoops comeback in a game of that magnitude ever. The perfect storm. :toast:
