'05 Houston Astros - NL Champions....sounds great doesn't it?? Being a "Homer" and living in Houston I can only root for the hometown boys. But I also have noticed that this team is starting to get that look of a "team of destiny". IMO they are better than last years squad because they have the pitching staff that can win games....not so much dependant on hitting to win. Much more so than they did last year, the "X-Factor" this year is Andy Pettitte, who is a tested playoff pitcher who ranks 2nd to Smoltz in playoff wins. I really think that this Astros team will beat the Cardinals this year.

FYI:

Mulder took a line drive off his left biceps in his Game 2 start against San Diego and would not have been able to pitch the remainder of the series against the Padres. La Russa said Mulder had improved Saturday, but he was uncertain when Mulder, who has swelling in the muscle, could pitch again.

"Chris gets Game 1, and I think there's a real question where Mulder fits in," La Russa said Saturday night. "It might be a little different depending on whether it's Atlanta or Houston. There's a couple matchups there we like better one way than the other."

The second area of concern for the St. Louis staff is its bullpen. In the three games against San Diego, Cardinals starting pitchers allowed 16 hits and three runs in 18 2/3 innings. The relievers gave up 16 hits, eight runs and three home runs in 8 1/3 innings.

Closer Jason Isringhausen was shaky in two of the three games and finished by allowing five hits and one run in three innings. But the setup relief might become a bigger problem in the next round.

The Cardinals suffered a major setback on the final day of the regular season when Al Reyes suffered an arm injury and was declared out for the season. Reyes was superb in middle-inning relief and often was used as a bridge to Isringhausen in the ninth.

Reyes was 3-1 with a 3.46 ERA, allowing 37 hits and 13 walks in 41 2/3 innings while striking out 43 batters. Without him, the Cardinals will have to rely on Julian Tavarez and Brad Thompson, both of whom struggled against the Padres. They combined to allow seven hits, four runs and two home runs in 2 2/3 innings for a 13.50 ERA.

The cardinals can hit...we all know that. But against good pitchers that the Astros have this could hurt them since their bullpen is not as good as Houston's staff..

Go Astros!!!!!!!!!!!

I Respect Astros But 11-5 Regular Season With Cards Not Caring Last 2 Games Says Enough. They Have Played And Hit Astros Big 3 All Year And Won Against Them So No Intimidation In This Series. Cards Win Vs Good Pitching And It Will Continue Here. I Am A Homer Also But Feel Cards Will Get It Done Again Though I Do Believe Winner Of This Series Wins It All.

• The Astros are the first team in postseason history to have three different pitchers, each with a career winning percentage of at least .650 in 100-or-more decisions, start the first three games of a series. One team had three different pitchers, each with 100-plus decisions, with a combined winning percentage of at least .650, start the first three games of a postseason series. The 1910 Cubs did that with Orval Overall, "Three Finger" Brown and Ed Reulbach (.675 combined).

The Reason This Series Was So Tight Last Year As Astros Were Equal With The Bats With Bagwell, biggio, berkman, kent, and Beltran. This Year No Beltran,no Kent, And Limited Bagwell Though You Can Now Add Ensberg To This List. Cardinals Will Small Ball These Pitchers And Get The Occasional Well Timed Home Run. This Series Will Not Go 7 This Year. Cardinals Win In 5 Most Likely 6.

2005 St. Louis Cardinals ...national League Champions And Likely World Series Champions.

Best Of Luck As I Do Respect Your Play But Feel We Both May Be A Little Homer Here But Believe Cards On A Mission!

Houston got what they wanted .......a split in STL and are looking forward to 3 games in Houston..where they were 53-28...1 game behind Boston for the best record at home. The Astros should take 2 of 3 at home and maybe comeback to STL with Roy "O" in game #6 and Roger Clemens in Game #7.
Either way this is going to be a great if my Astros can take it to the level and go to a World Series...

---If Astros get by with Clemens on Saturday....I look for the Houston pitching staff to take control of this series.

Loss of Sanders -- doubt if he plays this weekend -- is huge. Walker has nothing left. Spent 4 hours in the trainers room Thursday night getting ready for the game.

Houston pitching holds up and see no reason it does not....Astros just may pull it off. Saturday's game with Clemens is the key.

Agree that saturday is the key to the Astros win. Not sure if Roger can get it done this time ! But if they win with Roger, they probably win series. Maybe even world series!

Still think when the chips are down, STL still has a mental edge over Houston. People really underestimate the Cards pitching staff because they aren't named Clemens, Oswalt, and Pettite. Slight edge for Hou, imo.

The bigger advantages lie with STL, hitting and especially defense. Don't believe Cards are panicking at all after losing game 2, or even if they happen to get down 2-1.

They might not be panicking now...but if they go down 2-1 they will be...JMO....Think of it, being down 2-1 and having to face Pettite, Roy and Roger in 3 of the last 4 games...thats a tough outlook especially if they dont have Sanders for a game or 2.

``For us, it's the best one out of three right now. It doesn't get any easier,'' manager Phil Garner said. BIG MISTAKE BY PHIL GARNER. CARDS ARE NOW MOTIVATED AND WILL MAKE THE STROS PAY FOR THIS COMMENT,UMPIRE COZZI, AND WS CELEBRATION BY STROS IN GAME 4 AFTER WINNING ONLY 3RD GAME. IF THEY DON'T GET IT DONE TONIGHT, STROS WILL NOT WIN THIS SERIES. CARPENTER LIFETIME IN MINUTE MAID 3-0 UNDER 1 ERA AND THIS YEAR ALONE 5-0 UNDER 2 ERA. CARPENTER HAS NEVER LOST IN MINUTE MAID AND JUST READ ARTICLE HOW IT IS FAVORITE PLACE TO PITCH IN ML'S AND HOW HE WON'T BE INTIMIDATED TONIGHT. BETTER HOPE YOU GET IT DONE TONIGHT!

The AStros only win if they have another ump on the take like Cuzzi was last night.

lol, kojak

i told you the astros would win the next 3. and the only team that has to win today is the cardinals. srry pal. its almost over yet again for your cardinals.

but don't wrry, the astros will actually finish it off for the N.L. this year, and bring home the world series.

great pitching beats great hitting everytime. and i for one, would not take 1 of your starting pitchers over pettite, clemens, or oswalt.

carpetner is done, he had a decent game against san diego, but even you no in game 1 against houston he was shakey and was lucky to get the right double play at the right time.

deep down kojak you no its over.

but if it does get to a game 7, enjoy having matt morris out there.
