Is there any way to turn off the Banners?

I am using a very slow internet connection. The banners at the top of every thread take around a minute to load, and severely reduce the amount of threads I am able to read. I understand that the advertisers are what make the RX possible, and would not advertise here if they could be made invisible. However, I already know most of the books I want to use, and if the books that advertise here are offering a promotion that would cause me to check them out there is usually a new thread about it. Maybe if I can't turn them off, there is some option I can modify so that the banners don't have to refresh each time I click on a new thread. Can somebody help me out here?

As far as I know there is no way for posters to turn off banners, however there may be someone posting here with a solution for you.

well the very best you can do with this is turn off the images totally. Go to...

  • Tools
  • Internet Options
  • Click the advanced tab
  • Scroll down till you see the multimedia tree
  • Uncheck "show pictures"
It`ll look like shit...but at least you can still read all the threads and posts. It loads alot faster too

Thanks:toast:

Is there another browser that has better features for this kind of thing? It sounds like you must know of one that you'd like to recommend.

actually better yet...

you can use IE's turnabout. I use Firefox greasemonkey which are usermade scripts that can disable whatever I want...

Turnabout allows you to customize what page you want....or what site you want actually. I just downloaded it and the banners were gone

try it!

I had the same problem and found that switching to firefox makes pages load much faster. Dont know the technical details but it really does!

make firefox faster

To get started, type "about:config" in your firefox address bar. The settings you're looking for are:

1.) network.http.pipelining
2.) network.http.pipelining.firstrequest
3.) network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
4.) network.http.proxy.pipelining
5.) nglayout.ititialpaint.delay

Set #1, #2, and #4 to "true". Set #3 to a high number, like 32. Set #5 to 0.

Enabling the pipelining features allows the browser to make multiple requests to the server at the same time. The "maxrequests" is the maximum number of requests it will send at once. I've heard that 8 is the most it will send at once, but setting it higher won't hurt, just in case. The initialpaint.delay is the length of time (in milliseconds) after the server response before the browser begins to paint the page.

Adjusting those settings will help pages render much faster in firefox. In fact, my own observations have been that, tweaked in this manner, firefox will render faster than Opera (and yes, I realize that others may experience different results).

The firefox Tuning thread over at Mozillazine has more information for different connection speeds, etc.
