Anyone know of a good source to get them appraised? I have probably a thousand or so from the late 70's up through mid 80's. Entire set(s) of teams both NFL and MLB. Some still in original Bubble Gum wrappers, some in plastic, some just rubber banded together but all in vary good shape..

Just looking to get a handle on worth & value. I will most likely want to sell all of them.

If someone can help I would greatly appreciate it.

I think Beckett's is the foremost appraiser of sports cards. Contact a local collectible dealer and ask how to get a Beckett appraisal of your cards.

Take my word for this, Pay NO attention to beckett. The prices are so off it's laughable. Some of the vintage stuff (50's and 60's) they are close but the rest forget it. The best way to get values is to check ebay closed auctions. Only problem is the 70's and 80's are a pretty dead time for cards. If you have some Munsons, bonds, clemens etc.. they can be worth some value but it not much else.. Now if you had some old tobbaco cards!!! Katie bar the door!!!

If you have this baby i'll buy it right now!:

Check with a local shop

Most will tell you just to buy a beckett and look them up yourself. (great customer service in this field) Tell them you give them $20.00 to give you a written apprasial. As far as selling them good luck business at all time low. Keep them until thing turn around or be ready for a offer of 30% or less. Ebay is another option. I have own a stored for 20 years and not many of us left.

my experience has been that a card shop will value it too low and beckett will value it too high.

best thing to do is look on ebay and see what the sets and unopened packs/boxes that you have are going for. that is what you can expect to get...not what some book says.

also, the cards you have rubberbanded...might as well hold on to those as rubberbands tend to mangle the cards to the point that they are worthless.

not sure you would want to have psa grade them

Cost $10 per card and will eat you up unless you have some primo stuff. Beckett does offer a raw card grading service for $5.00 but would suggest you look them up before paying that to have them graded. Wouldnt grade anything under $100.00 unless it is pre 60's or is in gem shape. Alot of people think a card from the 50's in good shape is gem but it would need to look like a card just pulled out of the pack today to get a gem grade.

jarbo, when it comes time to sell it, establish an ebay user id and sell it off in pieces. as long as you dont need the money right away, you will get more if you sell it off in pieces than as a whole collection.

Post some or scan some

I can tell you if you have anything worth looking at. Brands and years or even players. But Brands and year are important. I will get more info from you if you have the key Brands or years.

Based on Jarbo's original post, I would get those unopened wax packs rated. Those would definately be tasty items at a card show or auction. PSA has tables at most major regional shows.

I have had probably 70+ cards rated by PSA over the last 5-7 years and I'm hitting about 80% as to what I think the final grade will come in as. Most have come in PSA 8-9, although a couple PSA 8's from the early 60's my old man spotted me have made up for it.

In terms of pure profit, blue is right, eBay is the route to go. Beckett generally overprices cards by anywhere from 20%-80%. Yes, 80% (just look at some of the basketball evalutations...i had a friend try to sell a gary payton card valued at $50 and no one would pay even $0.99 for it). eBay is more realistic in what you will get, also dont bother getting your cards graded unless it is a rookie of a primo athlete of a great set. I wouldn't bother getting your cards graded, because unless they grade as 10's or maybe 9's its not worth it. But be warned, your cards are stuck in the middle. Not many out there collecting 70's and 80's, some collecting pre-1970's but most collecting 1996 and up (when game used gear and autographs on cards became the rage). I sold about 300 of my own personal collection and only got good value for about 10. But good luck.

Thanks agian guys.

I do have an E-Bay account, just never sold anything - but was thinking the same thing. Just looking to get a handle on what is valuable and what is not.

I will continue the research and let you guys know. If I run across something of real value I will let everyone here know and if interested have first shot at them.
