Just something interesting for all you guys pulling for ND this weekend:

On October 15th, 1988, Notre Dame played vs. #1 Miami in South Bend. The past 3 times these teams faced off, Miami beat them by a combined 93 points. In Lou Holtz' first game vs. Miami, they upset Miami 31-30, and went on to win the national championship that year.
Saturday, October 15th, 2005, Notre Dame will face #1 USC in South Bend. The past 3 times these teams have faced off, USC has beat the Irish by a combined 93 points. This is Charlie Weis' first game vs. USC.

For a little icing on the cake? Notre Dame's Golden Dome was regilded this summer...the last time it was regilded prior to this year? 1988.

I cant believe how siked I am for this game, and I am not even an ND fan.

The Charlie Weis story is the best thing going in football right now.

Thanks for the tidbit dsethi

Wow! I never realized that the Holtz national championship came during his first year as head coach.

I was thinking that Larry Coker was the only first year head coach to win a national championship.

Are you positive it was Holtz' first year?

Another tid bit on this: Notre Dame has been a home dog 23 times since 1980. They are 11-12 SU in those games. Also, Notre Dame has been a dog to USC 12 times (both home and away) the last 25 years. The Irish are 5-6-1 SU in those games.

I am taking ND on the money line this weekend. Never underestimate the Luck 'o the Irish.

I think DSethi meant it was the first time Holtz had faced USC in his career.

I threw down a unit on the ML ND as well, just cuz I think they can win, but really cuz I'll be there on Saturday and hoping for the huge upset. Go Irish!

Very cool stat is nothing else. I'd love to see ND take them out, because they(ND) will NOT go undefeated.

The stat is cool as hell...the game will be ridiculous.
And i guess i didn't clarify, i meant Lou Holtz' first game vs. Miami- he didn't play them his first 2 years with the school apparently, but was one of the many ND coaches to win a title in his 3rd year as coach of the Irish.

Another insane stat regarding the USC-ND game, courtesy of dsethi: apparently 75,000 people are coming to South Bend this weekend for the game...THAT DON'T HAVE TICKETS.

That is unreal. Midway is completely sold out of rental cars. An entire fucking airport. Unreal.

Luckily, the three of us will be among the 80,000+ who DO have tickets. Gonna be an unreal weekend. If you're near the area, come down Friday night/Saturday morning and get fucked up with a big group of us.

I'm sure my brother will appreciate me inviting random people to party at his place this weekend. Oh well, who cares.

75,000...mind-boggling.

Leinhart loves to play against Notre Dame as is evidenced by his efforts over the last two seasons that has seen him smash the Irish sec-ondary completing 50 of 68 passes (74%) for 751 yards and nine touchdowns. Not a good omen for the Irish this week, considering the defensive secondary is still struggling and allowing an ugly 306 YPG. I know that many prognosticators will say, that the Irish are no slouches offensively either, and have plenty of fire power behind the arm of Heisman candidate QB Brady Quinn who has completed 65% of his passes for 1621 yards and 13 TDs. But despite of his lofty numbers and the emotional factors and home field advantage that will back the Popes favorite team , I still feel they are outclassed here as is every other team the Trojans face. Bottom line: USC after some close calls knows that they are only human, and can be beat. Look for the coaching staff and players to be focused this week as they treat this like a National Championship game. Final note: USC has outscored Irish 130 to 37 L/3 meetings. Play on USC minus the points </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Stuck, unfortunately that I probably a pretty accurate post about how I feel that this will end.

....I won't be playing this game, but will be rooting for the upset-which I really don't see happening, but sometimes ya just gotta hope.

Am I correct in assuming that this is 90% Irish Nation & 10% USC fans? No ticket, game like this? Scalpers are going to CLEAN HOUSE!

Yes USC out classes ND. But dont forget about the GHOST of ND. Strange things happen Every saturday, this might be just another one. ND can score and USC not much D, so that leaves the backdoor wide open. Home Dog pruddy good most always.

This stat is completely worthless. Wies far outclasses willingham in terms of coaching talent.
Hell, ND might score 37 this game.

Look for ND to work some ball control offense as well...keep that USC offense off the field. I really think having two weeks to prepare is going to have a big effect on this game.

Also look out for Rhema McKnight. He was ND's best WR last year, but has been out with an injury all year. He's questionable. If he plays, that's a HUGE bonus for ND. He's much better than Stovall, who's been playing out of his mind so far this year but still shows flashes of his old, stone-handed self. The frosh WR(who's last name I'm not even going to attempt to spell and am too lazy to look up right now) has also had a great year and become a favorite target of Quinn's, but with McKnight back, he could be absolutely lethal as the 3rd WR.

This should be a great game. THE SPIRIT LIVES! STIR THE ECHOES!

People underestimate Weis' coaching ability? 17-10 win over Michigan? Courtesy of great coaching, completely blowing away that Michigan D at home with a no huddle offense. You think it's coincidence that Quinn is projected to crush the ND single season record for passing and that Szmardja and Stovall are top flight WRs this year? Weis is a difference maker. And you better believe the MSU loss AT HOME pissed the fuck out of him.
What's even more crazy is that one of the ESPN stations is broadcasting the PEP RALLY tomorrow at 6, which will be in the stadium, first time in ages it's been in the stadium b/c Weis felt bad for turning people away at the MSU game from the Joyce Center, and THAT MANY PEOPLE are coming this weekend w/ or w/o tickets...DO THIS IRISH.

Read where Pinny was getting 4x the action on this game as the next highest NCAAF game. Must admit I will stay on the sidelines, (unless a last minute change of heart or wiskey induced ND bet), but I am pulling for ND.
