You've all heard they might implement a dress code for inactive NBA players sitting on the sidelines during the game. Instead of dressing like a gangsta they might be required to dress a bit more professionally.

Here is a funny quote about it

"I don't see it happening unless every NBA player is given a stipend to buy clothes."
-- Marcus Camby (who will make $7.15 million this season) on the NBA invoking a new dress code

How ridiculous it that?

I hope so.

I'm sick of them hanging out with gawdy jewelry and football jerseys on.

Camby needs to stfu. he has to be kidding me if he doesnt have any 3 piece suits. Rediculous comment.

It was a stupid comment but what's even worse is the NBA forcing these guys to wear certain clothes. It's not a funeral. They are sitting on the sidelines during the games.

They should wear whatever they want.

An NBA game is not a black-tie affair.

Camby can definately afford to buy all the nice suits he wants, and he phrased it about as stupid as he could, but I can understand what he was trying to get across.

In a nutshell, he's saying that he's not going to spend his money on suits. If the NBA wants him to wear suits, they can buy him suits to wear. He shouldn't be forced to spend his cash on stupid stuff like this.

He can definately afford to, he just doesn't feel its right.

Let the guy wear all the jerseys and bling he feels like. He's not an office worker and the crowd at NBA games aren't in suits and ties.

BS rule.

Why dress code when you can show off your bling bling and that's what they're good at.

Greg Ostertag needs to get some bling. Maybe a flava flave neck-clock.

He could rock it.

And thats why they play the game.

A lot of places of employment have dress codes, i wear a tie every day and dont want too, but it comes with the job.

I even had to buy them on my own.

I see no problem with it, some of these outfits are ridiculas.

Do you see any Yankees with facial hair? Randy Johnson shaved back his mullett? Whys that? Not because he wanted to. Employer rules.....

Ummmmm. Who do you think is paying for the floor seats, suites, club seats, etc?

Yep, the suit & tie crowd.

NBA has a Catch-22. The hip-hop crowd (or whatever you want to call it) is buying the jerseys, shoes, video games, etc. When Allen Iverson sits on the bench in his Bucks throwback jersey and bling-bling, it appeals to the hip-hop crowd.

But the hip-hop crowd doesn't buy luxury seats. Maybe they buy a few $20 tickets, that's it.

Meanwhile, the suits are paying millions for the luxury seats. Some of the suits can't relate to the "new" NBA, and this will eventually hurt revenue, corporate sponsors, etc.

Don't believe me? Well, Stern obviously thinks it is a problem. You think he is pushing this dress-code because he is anal about fashion? Of course not. He understands that the NBA has an image problem.

If nothing else, wearing jeans and a baseball cap is bush league. Lots of *high school* teams require their players to wear shirt & tie when they travel to away games. Pathetic that NBA players can't do the same.

Like most dress codes, it's not about "appearance" or "professionalism"; it's about a boss's power trip. David Stern is a piece of crap.

Disagree. It seems like a simple step towards repairing the tarnished reputation and image of the league.

Stern is way off on this one, there is no way to enforce this. Remeber a few years ago I think the Nets when Rod Thorn got there tried to tell their players to wear suits on the team plane or else they would be fined and Derrick Coleman just wrote out a check for the whole year and said there was no way he would do it so he was getting the fine out of the way up front.

Why not just say any player on the roster has to wear the team's uniform if he is on the bench. If they are so injured they can't change out of street clothes, then let them stay home and treat their injuries.

I can agree with that. I think the point is that anyone affiliated with the team should be representing the team and league in the best possible light in the arena during gametime. If part of that means that the league adopts a standard for "non-dressing" players (suit, uniform, warmups, etc.) it should not really cause too much static.

Marcus Camby is only worried about a stipend because he would have to buy a new designer suit for each of the 50 games he misses every year.

I think the idea is nt that bad. I see the NBA wants more a professional image. With the whole Detroit-Indiana brawl last season maybe they're trying to improve upon it somewhat. Though I thought I read somewhere the players don't mind if there is a dress code. They just don't want the NBA telling them what they can't and can wear off the court.

Remember the NFL is super picky about what the players wear on the field. Players get fined for wearing socks too low or the jersey untucked. That is pretty crazy IMO.

Did you seriously just imply that if players wore suits, more rich folks would buy luxury seats?

Ummmmmmmm, no...

People come to watch NBA games because they like the sport. Shouldn't matter what a player wears on the sideline.

Making these guys wear suits won't do shit for the image of the NBA. As soon as these guys are off the court, they will rock the jerseys and bling. In their shoe commericals it's more jersey and bling.

Putting these guys in a suit so people can see them for 5 minutes sitting by the bench in a suit is useless when you see them 95% of the time on TV commercials and shows rocking whatever they want.

Stupid rule for uptight people in my opinion.
