From the personality perspective, problem gambling has much in common with the addictive disorders. Individual differences in dimensions of personality may play an important part in explaining risk for disordered gambling behaviour as well as the comorbidity between disordered gambling behaviour and other substance-related addictive disorders.

Researchers from New Zealand undertook a longitudinal population based study involving a birth cohort of 939 people (475 men, 464 women). At age 18 the participants completed questionnaire assessments of personality. At age 21, structured interview-based diagnoses of past-year problem gambling and alcohol, cannabis and nicotine dependence were obtained.

Problem gambling at age 21 was associated with higher scores on the higher order personality dimension of negative emotionality (difference 0.90) and with lower scores on the personality dimension of constraint (difference-0.72) compared with control subjects. Problem gambling was also associated with indicators of risk taking (difference 0.50) and impulsivity (difference 0.56).

The personality profile associated with problem gambling was similar to those of alcohol, cannabis and nicotine dependence.
