I'm having big problems with the laptop. I bought it because of problems with the desktop ! On the old one now. Can't do anything with the portable !

I get messages about corrupt files, system 32, etc. I have a restore disc, but wouldn't I lose everything on it if I use it ? I don't trust these things at all, so keep records on paper !

Could it be bootleg version of Excel, or a poker room download causing errors ? I'll have trusty neighbor help when he's available. Could allowing him to access my router be a cause ? I don't think those things would do it, but don't have strong computer credientials.

Any ideas !

Your operating system is corrupt. Could be because of a virus, improper shutdown or Spyware infestation.

Re-install your operating system. Some restore programs keep your old files and just reinstall the OS files.

Could you try doing system restore perhaps? Not an expert but this seems like a possibility.

I'm not doing anything until neighbor gives his advice, but glad to read any input from here !

I'm likely to make things worse acting on my own ! Info with restore disc leads me to believe nothing would be saved.

Yep

Go to www.trendmicro.com & run the free virus scan
Download Adaware and\or Spybot at download.com & run it\them...remove what they find.

Go from there...if those 2 don't fix it, you probably have real issues. Not good.

I can't even get to the desk-top display on the lap-top screen ! I'd never trust a computer file to store important records, it could disappear with no trace , at any time. I lack knowledge of computers, but just don't trust them !

This SHIT happens, all the time !

So why even ask here?

Sorry it just pisses me off to see someone ask for help and then when help is given basicly tell them their opinion is worth $hit.

What's the point?

Note to self: No more free advice.

BTW, I setup networks and troubleshoot workstations for a living.

I'm not going to attempt re-installing the operating system, unless as a last resort. I prefer live help. Never said your opinion was worth SHIT, just reluctant to act in haste, and maybe make it worse !

I'll show thread to neighbor, maybe something here will help. Exploring options, nothing negative from me.

Thanks to any and all for help !

Lol didnt expect you to reinstall OS.

Restore however is a straight forward process. It will tell you whether your files are going to be deleted before you hit confirm.

Don't sweat it BBG....he's just frustrated. I had no idea that you were "one of us" (network guys).

Doug, if the desktop won't show up, you're in pretty bad shape. NOTHING will be lost, but you are pretty much screwed unless you can get past that.

Don't do anything drastic yet-I can walk you through a couple things on the phone tomorrow to see if there is any hope.

I'm headed out to get some food before I DIE!!!

Tin: cool , could you e-mail me your digits, should I need them ? You should be able to get my e-mail, since you're a mod. I'm probably talking phone help after first NFL kick-off.

Baseball: No ill will intended, I understand frustration in dealing with people that lack expertise in whatever fields we excel in,they rarely match, thanks for help , brother ! No reason for this thread to get a mean tone, I never had a problem with you, that I recall.

Peace man !

If you're running windows 2000 or XP. Put in the Windows CD and have it boot it up to a blue screen. Follow the blue screen until you see an option to repair or new install.

Just choose repair and use the spacebar to check the the option to repair startup files.
It's just propably just a corrupt /winnt/system32/kernel.dll file.

Like the other guy said, those situations are usually just from you doing cold reboot or power went out and PC shut off itself.

Thanks for the link TT. This free scan found some stuff that my overpriced Nortons' Suite couldn't detect.

I have neighbor helping helping, now ! He has some questions, I'll let him type them in.

Thanks in advance !

We can not find a windows cd,all we have is a recovery cd. When we put that in it says we lose all saved files. I thought we could try starting up in safe mode, but when we start the computer it say "A disk error occurred
Press CLrl+Alt+Del to restart". When I do that it comes back to disk error again. Any suggestions?

restart your computer and keep pounding the F8 button and it will come up in safe mode.
