What a crock....this is pissing me off now. Bush fully admits that he shoved Leinart "as hard as he could" to win the game, a clearly ILLEGAL move which just happened to be overlooked by the Pac 10 officiating crew. Not only did it give USC a win in a game that they lost, USAtoday lists Bush as a player of the week nominee-in part due to the ILLEGAL play.

Here we are, stuck with all this dynasty and national championship talk over a team that should have a loss.

I"M SICK OF HEARING ABOUT HOW WONDERFUL USC IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

is it just me, or did Leinart land in the end zone on the play he fumbled? Everyone keeps saying they would have lost if not for that fumble.

That push is illegal, but I can't remeber seeing it ever called. I have seen lineman do it numerous times usually not so blatant though.

Yes and this rule use to be enforced more than it is now...ironically the refs throw more flags than ever than blow this last play...that game should have went to OT...

Lets not forget the miracle pass on 4th down that set it all up, give Matt credit he threaded the needle, the defender turned a split second late...the spot seemed too close to the goal line as well.

It is rare but they use to call it...Actually I have seen players do this of late but thought the rule was no longer in the book, it never gets called...

Off topic, what about the BS call that went against the Saints to end that game?

It seems refs and officials are involved in so many close or controversial calls over the past month!

That Saints ending was horrendous. They already had a penalty to get 5 yards closer and then that call.

Plus they had given up 2 TD returns in the 1st half, they were cursed in that game.

I think too many refs like the attention, it used to be a well officiated game was one where you didn't notice them. Now we have a hundred TV cameras and we hand mics to the refs and give them replays to interrupt the game - it is getting worse

Blame instant replay for the decline in the quality of officiating. They have become gutless because they know the video will make the right call anyway, so they don't have to take a stance.
Sure there were mistakes before instant replay, but there are still just as many if not more calls now with it.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Upon further review, Charlie Weis thinks the officials got almost everything right at the end of the Southern California game.

After watching replays, though, he's not sure the ball should have been spotted inside the 1-yard line after USC quarterback Matt Leinart fumbled.

``I think it was pretty close to being right,'' Weis said Monday, meeting with reporters for the first time since immediately after Saturday's 34-31 loss to the top-ranked Trojans.

</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=center>He said the officials could have gotten the call exactly right, except USC coach Pete Carroll had vetoed use of instant replay.

The disputed play occurred in the closing seconds. On second-and-goal from the 2, Leinart rolled out left back to the 10, then turned up field toward the end zone. At about the 2 he leaped toward the end zone and was hit hard by Irish linebacker Corey Mays, jarring the ball loose. The ball bounced out of bounds. In the confusion the clock continued to run, ticking down to 0:00.

Irish fans flooded the field and Weis walked out on the field with his arms raised, but he never took his headset off. He knew the game wasn't over.

``Not for one second did I really believe that the clock was really going to run out,'' he said.

Weis said the referee first told him Leinart had fumbled the ball forward, then ruled he had fumbled it backward. He said he was told by the referee that the official who had made the ruling had changed his mind.

The placement became key because on the next play, a quarterback keeper, Leinart scored the game-winner in the 34-31 victory with second effort and a push by tailback Reggie Bush.

Weis said he wishes the Pac-10 officials could have used instant replay to make sure they got the call exactly right.

``Without replay, you don't know for sure,'' he said.

After seeing replays, some Irish fans were upset that Bush wasn't penalized for pushing Leinart in. But Weis said even though it's against the rules, he had no problem with it.

``That's a heads up by Reggie and hopefully any running back I had would be pushing right along with him,'' he said.

Weis said if he had any real complaint about officiating at the end it was that USC assistant coach Brennan Carroll, Pete Carroll's son, was down near the end zone signaling for a time-out and wasn't penalized.

``They are out of the coach's box and they are calling time-outs with no time-outs left,'' Weis said. ``Now that's a penalty and that alone puts them out of touchdown scoring range and to field goal range.''

Despite various media calling it a great game and Pete Carroll calling it a classic, Weis didn't think so.

``You can say whatever you want, it's not going to be one of my greatest games because we lost,'' he said. ``It will never be one of my greatest games.''

Weis tried to turn the disappointment into a teaching moment. He told his 12-year-old son, Charlie Jr., he wanted them to walk over to the USC locker room to congratulate them on their win.

``He thought I was hallucinating when I said that,'' Weis said. Because of the magnitude of the game and the way it ended, Weis thought it was the gracious thing to do. ``I just wanted to let them know that I had respect for their team and the way they played and I thought that they showed a lot of character to go back and win that game,'' he said. ``I thought it was a good lesson for my son."

Man,
Weis just keeps on becoming a bigger legend every day.
After the heartbreak of calling a near-perfect game and losing like that, he takes his son over to congratulate USC!

I'll take a few future contracts that Charlie Weis' son turns out OK.

I never really liked Notre Dame, but Coach Charlie Weis makes it impossible not to root for them.

"He said the officials could have gotten the call exactly right, except USC coach Pete Carroll had vetoed use of instant replay."

Isn't that cute? Knew that the west coast refs would take care of them & didn't want any replays to cause them problems.

Complete BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!

The penalty on Brennan Carroll would have been offset by Weis' delay of game when he left the coach's box and wouldn't get off the field.

Or it might be the case that Pete Carroll has stated many times before that he hates instant replay whether it hurts or helps him. So when he had the opportunity to choose, he chose not to use it. Don't make it sound like he chose no instant replay for this game because it was PAC-10 officials.

Weis said that the push by Reggie Bush was a heads up play. He said that if his team were in the same situation he would hope his running back would do the same thing.

So it sounds like Weis didn't have a problem with the push from behind.

I like Weis alot. He's going to make that ND team very competitive for years.
How can you not root for a guy who let a dying kid call the very first play of the game but when they started at their own 1 yard line he kept his word and got a 1st down. :103631605

I am not sure but I do not think pushing in the NCA is illegal. It happenes all the time, and has to be pretty blatant to be called if it even is a openalty. Especially considering I have NEVER seen it call in collge. You obviously cannot PULL someone in, (I HAVE seen that called) , but I am not sure pushing is illegal.

I remember in Super Bowl XX when The Fridge picked up Walter Payton and tried to throw him into the end zone! He definitely got flagged for that one.

you got benden carroll calling a timeout , they dont have any .

you got leinart turning around and asking bush " should i go for it "

you got pete carroll on the sideline motioning for leinart to spike it.

then you got carroll and leinart saying that the play was a set play to sneak it in and that their was no way they wanted to go to overtime ..

all kinds of issues in the last 7 seconds and wow were they lucky.. he doesnt fumble and the clock runs out. cause he didnt cross the goal line.
i also think they got a generous spot on where the ball got placed.. vould have easily been placed at the 2 or 2 1/2 yard line.

TTinco there would be nothing for them to challenge... so the replay would be irrelevant in this case..

Replay only deals with the call on the field ie (the touch down in this case)

Weis or any other coach can not challenge the touchdown due to an illegal push...Just like a coach cant challenge a completed pass play due to a hold, or offensive pass interference etc!!!

As far as i know, calling a timeout with none left is not a penalty in college. The NCAAF rulebook says the ref should just ignore the request if the team has none left.

Leinart landed in the end zone so if he kept it, it would have been a touchdown. The ball flew out of bounds and almost hit the refs face. I'm pretty sure he had a good idea where it went out. It looked like the was supposed to be spotted further back because of the camera angle.

Carroll said he called for the spike as a decoy so the defense would relax.
