A Yankee is a 4 selection multiple bet consisting of what you call parlays
6 Doubles
4 Trebles 1 Accumulator = 11 bets
Why its called a Yankee, I've never heard, a 5 selection bet is called a Canadian in Britain, where the Yankee bet is the most popular and foolish there is in British betting Shops, but of course the lure is the big money for small stakes if successful.
4 Selections, A, B, C, D
Doubles go AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, CD
Trebles go ABC, ABD, ACD, BCD
Accumulators - ABCD
Most popular for horseracing. The British betting mentality in the old days was mainly small stakes to win big money. Thats what most betting office customers would think. Once betting tax was axed in 2001, that all changed.
It's basically a pointless bet except some shops for example BetFred offer a bonus for an all-correct yankee. More so the so-called Lucky 15, which in the right hands can be quite a sharp play.
Yankees, Lucky 15's etc are all mug bets nowadays because even if you have positive expectation about each individual selection you won't get the best odds for each selection.
If I came up with 5 bets on horses i wanted to do and wanted to perm them up trebles and up (16 bets) and wanted to do this for say 10 Uk pounds a unit there is no way that a bookie will let me have fixed odds on the last selection - they would insist on SP only and would force down their liabilities by reducing the odds on track of your selection.
So basically, all these bets are mug bets - ok for those who expect to lose and occasionally have a thrill with first couple of selections coming in. Chip away with single bets is the only way.
£10 trebles from five at early prices valueman? Shouldn't be too tough to get on. No point betting the fourfolds though as you'd probably hit most bookies' payout ceiling.
James Hunt - Believe me I could NEVER get the early price of the 5th selection - EVER!
Stan James, WH, Corals, Ladbrokes etc all refused me. This was in 1999 - since then I've only bet singles and the odd placepot for the Cheltenham festival.
Nowadays, I can't get a bet on to win 1500 pounds at early prices with anyone - singles included.
