It's nutty with stores open at 5am, people there hours before that, limited quantities, etc.

if you like to use your MP3 while exercising, go with any RIO Sport models. they're easy to use (you never have to read the instructions to rip cds, transfer songs to your player, or use features on the player).

The ones from 6 months ago hold 4 hours of music, and cost about $100. They're sweat resistant, and shock resistant (if you drop it on asphalt, it won't even stop playing).

Check out ebay. As discussed in the Ebay thread the other day, there are a TON of wholesale, brand new electronics being sold there.

On a somewhat related note-if you ever find yourself thinking about buying something off of a TV ad....search for it on Ebay, you'll be surprised how much below "retail" the junk goes for.

The IPod is the MP3 player made by Apple.

The advantages of an IPOD over other MP3 players is:
a) It is very easy to use and that is why girls/women like it.
b) It has a flash memory, and that is why it is small. The IPOD-nano is thinner than a pencil
c) It has a long battery life, so its great for people who take the train to work (like me) and listen to it at work and don't get to recharge it for 8-10 hours.
d) It has an "image" or "brand name" associated with it - its not just an MP3 player made by some company in Korea - its THE REAL THING. The unique white headphones also lets people know that its an IPOD

The bad:

It costs more.

$299 for an IPOD nano, and maybe $149 for a similar thing from a lesser known company with a little less memory (but more than you'll use), more complicated interface and a shorter battery life.

So the question is: Do you want a Chevy for $15,000 or a Volvo for $35,000?

If you're getting her this for Christmas, it depends on what else you're getting her, how much the other things cost, how trendy she is, how good she is with electronics and how snobby her friends are.

PS: There is also an "Ipod shuffle", which simply keeps playing songs randomly. It sells for $99, but that would be like getting her a little scooter made by BMW.
