A Las Vegas jury will most likely decide this week, today or Friday, whether Irwin Schiff is innocent or guilty of tax-evasion. Schiff and his followers claim an innocent verdict would prove you don't have to pay tax.

They are claiming the judge was hand-picked, but hoping the jury will see that Schiff and his team showed there is no law mandating an income tax.

Irwin Schiff has been fighting an uphill battle against the IRS and challenging the entity's right to collect tax. This man has fought long hard and openly. He even has public signs up at his business, Freedom Books, 444 East Sahara, Las Vegas, Nevada 89104.

Warning : I know for a fact many of his followers have been jailed.

He's got no chance of being found Not-guilty...even OJ couldn't beat this rap.

Although I agree the odds are long I wouldnt say "no chance". All he needs is to have a few disgruntled taxpayers on the jury. If it was just before a judge he would have no chance but a jury is different.

There are states with no income tax. TX FL Alaska Wyoming, Nevada. They survive. Just start a national sales tax of a few percent and the country would be so much simpler.

I believe most of the public would love this idea, but it probably won't ever happen, too many IRS employees and accountants would be out of work. The idea would be too easy, you know the government wants no part of something so logical and simple.

This case is based on the federal income tax. Schiff has long maintained that no law was ever passed that would make federal taxes mandatory.

The jury asked for the IRS code book today, but the judge denied the request. Needless to say the Schiff team was outraged. (Schiff has repeatedly talked about several "voluntary income tax references" in the IRS code book). The verdict will now be delayed until next week.

There was a book released a few months ago called "The Fair Tax Book"... (I think)...which outlined and argued for a plan to create a national sales tax that would take the place of both income taxes and FICA taxes. The number would need to be about 15% with certain types of purchases excluded.

There is much solid theory behind it but I believe the current line that it will ever happen is +10000.

Las Vegas anti-tax advocate Irwin Schiff was convicted Monday October 24, 2005 on 14 counts of tax fraud and evasion. Government prosecutors say for years he has defrauded the federal government by refusing to pay federal incomes taxes.

Schiff has even made a business out of teaching people how to do it. His supporters blame the conviction on jury ignorance.

Steven Dempsey, Schiff supporter, "These verdicts happen because Americans, unfortunately right now, are unaware of their rights in many instances."

Wes Eddy, with the IRS said, "Today's convictions send a clear message that we are committed to vigorously enforcing the tax law. Taxpayers must meet their tax obligations and abide by the law. There are no gray areas in this issue."

Irwin Schiff is in federal custody Monday night. Judge Kent Dawson believes he is a flight risk.
