Was Kevin Butler involved? One year, it seemed like the Bears won every week on a 53 yarder as time expired.

ESPN said the Edinger 56 yard FG against GB was the 2nd longest FG ever kicked to end a game.

Tom Dempsey kicked a 63 yarder as time expired against detriot in the early 70's I belive was the other.

Sure there have been 50-55 yarders kicked to many to mention that also were kicked as time expired.

Dempsey's was a game winner as time expired? I didn't know that. Of course it would make sense that they'd only try a 63 yarder at the end of a half or end of a game.

I was too young to recall that kick, but I do remember Dempsey getting a kick blocked and making the tackle. Quite a sight to see.

And he kicked the ball from his own 37 yard line since the goal posts were right on the goal line in 1970. Plus he only had half a foot remember.

Tom Dempsey of the Saints, born with half a foot, booting an historic 63-yard field goal as the Lions' Alex Karras (far left) tries for a block. "I learned from my father as a kid that there was no such word as ‘can't,’" Dempsey said.<!--InstanceEndEditable -->

the answer is :

It has happened one time. It happend on Sunday as Edinger kicked a 56 yarder as time expired to give the Vikes the win over the Pack and Josh Brown hit a 50 yarder as time expired to propel the Seahawks to victory! Only time in NFL history two games ended on a 50+ FG try to end the game on the same day.:drink:

vike- for some reason the way the question was worded I was thinking it happened one other time besides sunday.

and when you look at Dempsey where did he generate his power, kicking back then wasn't so much about generating torque with the toe-ball style...amazing

You guys probably won't believe this but in high school [ 60's ] I kicked straight on barefoot with my toes curled up. Could hit about 2 out of 5 from 50 yds in practice. Would make contact with the pad of the foot.

Was watching that Dempsey game on TV in Saginaw Michigan.

Speaking of barefoot-

Whatever happened to the barefoot kickers?

The last I recall was Russell Erxleban and Tony Franklin?

I never really understood the benefit of kicking without a shoe.

Speaking for myself way back then I simply could not afford or find a square toed shoe. Soccer style kicking had not come around yet and even remotely accurate kicking straight on with a regular shoe was rather impossible.

I played soccer for a long time and hyperextended my knees so badly from the toe-ball style kicks...I can remember walking and my kneecap felt like it was it was gone...toe-ball kicking, while it can be very effective if you know how to strike the ball is very taxing on the knees...wow i hadn't thought of that in 15 years.
