Isn't an Illegal Shift the same thing as a False Start?

I had a prop tonight in MNF that a False Start would be the first acepted penalty. When the ref called ATL for an illegal shift, I thought I had won. But my book graded it as a loss...
Isd this correct?

Nope an illegal shift is when two or more offensive players move a the same time before snap. WR's, TEs and RBs can move before snap and not be penalized for a false start. sorry

Hmmm.......illegal shift, motion, false start-I swear they are all equal in college, but not sure about NFL.

I had thought so too T. Guess I now know why they give such a generous +300 line for a False Start ...

The ref does'nt say "illegal shift" to signify false start. The ref also uses a different hand signal for illegal shift. Don't know how you could of thought you won.

That's what led to my uncertainty about the NFL.....aren't they all illegal motion in college?

(I've never played a prop like this, so never bothered to look)

I think illegal motion in college is when a WR is moving forward towards the line before the snap. I don't think they are the same. I once downloaded the college football rulebook online. I was able to print the whole thing out.

Interesting rule that i was researching at the time was whether a FG attempt was considered good if it went through the uprights but due to heavy wind, blew back out. I believe the rulebook said that the kick is good as soon as it clears the posts, but i could be wrong.
