Whenver you are moving and go to the post office and fill out a change of address form for your mail, what happenes to your mail that is sent to your old address? Does the post office send the mail back to sender and have them remail it to your new address or does the post office automatically forward the mail to your new mailing address and notify the sender of the address changed? I requested a payout from a book through neteller and since I didn't deposit via neteller, they sent me a check instead without even asking me first. Problem is I am moving this weekend. Anybody know how the mail forwarding process works?

It gets forwarded automatically from the PO to your new address
I think this happens for only a certain amount of time 3 months?? before it will start being sent back to the sender

To my knowledge the post office in your former town puts a yellow sticker with your forwarding address over the old address and sends the mail to your new address. At the same time, if they've indicated "forwarding service requested", the sender receives notification of your new address to update their records. There is a time limit on all of this but I think it's at least 3-6 months.

Go to the Us Postal Site on the internet and you can do the change immediately online. They ask you to use a credit card to make the change, and the credit card has to have a billable address of either your old or new address. The charge is $1.00 to your credit card, but the change can go in place the very next day. An advice of your change made by the post office goes to your email address as well for your records.

Hope this helps.............

Once upon a time, after my Army days, I was a postal worker.

First class mail such as bills, drivers license letters will be forwarded to your new address.

Second class mail aka periodicals such as most magazine subscriptions will be forwarded...if you are lucky..to your new address.

Third class mail aka standard A mail and bulk rate mail will not be forwarded.

Fourth class mail aka standard B and/or "junk mail" will not be forwarded.

The fowarding system often gets delayed and sometimes you may not receive.

It is recommended to inform all important places that mail items to you about your new address prior to moving.

Also, you will need to fill out the forwarding new address card which goes to the local distribution plant, which if you live in a large city, will not be your "local" post office.

I would also recommend you inform your regular mail carrier and also make a visit to the postal station in your particular zipcode a day or so before you want the mail stopped and if available speak with the supervisor. Hand them a note to be placed at that routes case (where your mail is sorted every morning).

If your carrier is a slacker and misses alot of work time, many subs probably work the route and wont know you have moved and some mail may slip through the initial forwarding system.

This sounds like alot, but if you want it done thoroughly, I recommend you follow these procedures.

Also, when at your new address, when you receive other folks' mail, be sure you cross out the name and most importantly cross out the barcode on the letter for that is how most mail is sorted. Also write CFS (central fowarding system) on the letter. That way your wont continue receiving others' mail and that person will get their mail or it will be returned to the original sender if no fowarding was provided.

The postal service has never been known for its efficiency, but much better than many years ago. Often times problems with mail delivery are caused because folks dont properly address and/or forwarding procedures.

Post office Mail

Good Luck is all i can say. If you are moving to a new town, they have a new procedure that works like priority mail to a new address. It cost i think 15.oo month. I spend the winters away every year and after fighting with the post office over my lost mail it was better to have someone get my mail and fed ex it to me. I talked to four different supervisore last year trying to get my mail. Some was lost, some was sent. Some was never found. They said a new computer system now seperates the forwarding mail and they don!t have all the glitches out.

Daddy: I'm a former postal worker as well, hated it !

First class is forwarded for one year, 2C maybe 3 months, 3C becomes UBBM.

Dealay in check due to CFS may be several weeks.

Good post, I gotta go, more later ! Your advice is solid ! :103631605
