Can someone tell me how to close my open ports. I was playing yahoo spades and this person whom i was beating said i had all these open ports, my computer was not secure, and they were going to send me viruses.

Am I just being gullible here? Is this type of thing really possible? How do i know if my computer is secure? I do a lot of moving money around on the internet and am starting to get worried about someone stealing passwords etc.

Thanks in advance for any help.

To begin with.. Do you have a firewall installed?

By playing poker with someone, there is no reason why they should be able to tell what IP you are coming from (Unless there is some REALLY bad poker software out there that I'm not aware of). What site were you playing at?

And yea, you shouldn't be able to pick up one's IP address through it.

Hey klowinn, thanks for the response. But before I go downloading all this stuff, I just thought I would ask a quick question.

I just bought a toshiba satellite in May so its not like i am using an apple IIE or anything. Would it have a firewall already on there, or is this something that doesn't come with the computer.

I feel stupid even asking these questions. I know nothing regards to how computers actually work, but I do know how to use them to find some quality porn.

What port #'s are they. Remember, you need some ports opened.

By the way, how is the battery on your new Toshiba Satellite?

At least someone read the post (obviously not me...lol). This guy is pulling your leg about being able to hack into your computer, but I CAN NOT OVERSTATE how important it is to have a firewall and REAL TIME virus scanner. Without those two, you're making it way too easy for the info on your computer to be stolen. All it takes is going to the wrong website or opening the wrong email & you're screwed. It's not worth the risk!!

25 smtb

110 pop3

135 loc-srv

139 netbios--ssn

445--microsoft ds

Battery sucks, only lasts about 1.5-2 hrs, but otherwise I love it--no problems, extremely fast.

So would it have a firewall installed???

Thanks all.

Justein, go here DSL REPORTS PORT SCAN and do the scan, just click RPOBE. This will show your vulnerabilities and recomend action to take (firewall etc)

Here's my scan result

thats the worst laptop you could have bought man!!!!! I am using one currently and i think it sucks!!!! I hope my winnings pickup because i am ditching this POS laptop as soon as i can find some sucker who will buy it on ebay!!!!:lolBIG:

Ps...To tell the truth, the laptop model i got had over heating issues, it would crash and i couldnt charge the damn battery at one time, even worse yet, i couldnt use it with the power cable connected to it!!!
But i sent it to one of their repair centers and they fixed it and i have had no problems ever since...(It didnt cost me anything to get it fixed but this was a well known issue that they should have informed me about when i made the purchase!!!) I read some where, people wanted to sue them but i never joined because mine was fixed

Jestein, I'm almost certain that you do NOT have a firewall. Unless you are on a company network, having port 445 open is BAD news.....big security risk. Off the top of my head, I know that 139 is about as bad.

Good link #1 Cheat....I had forgotten which site had that (and boy does it piss off Norton internet security when you run it :103631605 ).

Hey guys, thanks a lot for all your help.

I did the scan on the page that cheat posted and I got this:

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=4 width="90%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle colSpan=2>Your Results for this scan</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ccffcc colSpan=2><BIG>Conclusion:</BIG> Healthy Setup! I am going to download that free firewall now.

Thanks again, I feel a lot better and hopefully it helped others.
