Does anyone still go to an actual race track and wager regularly?

I was at the Timonium Race Track in Md around labor day for the State Fair, and sat in on a couple races, its never appealed to me...but it was fun watching the horses fly around the track...

I don't think I'd have the patience to wait for the races between races...seems like a lot of sitting and waiting.

As many games as I've bet on , I had absolutely no desire to even put 10 bucks down on that race that day...does it take time to get hooked on horse racing ?

been going to the harness tracks for over 17 years but I have also lost interest over the years. It's such a hard game to beat and if you lose your first race ( which is highly likely) it feels like your playing catch up all nite. It's weird but I can put $500 on game and not flinch but $50 bucks on a race and I feel like I am going to have a heart attack.

I can totally relate to that, I went up to Delaware Park and played slots and was dying because I lost 80 bucks...funny how that is.

why is winning a bet on a race 10x the thrill of winning a game you bet on. Give me a $20 winning ticket in deep stretch and I act like im having an orgasm!

This past Saturday I had about four hours to kill before boarding a plane in Hartford CT and went to my very first Offtrack betting joint.

There were maybe a couple hundred people in there and I had to go all the way to the very back to the corner "SportsBar" so I could catch the ESPN feed of OSU/Indiana.

I rarely drink these days, but got a nice load on while watching my lame-ass Indy +15 bet go down the toilet.

Also dropped a big $10 on a race from Belmont. Bet on a 5/2 horse to WIN and it finished about a hundred yards behind the winner....heh

Overall vibe in the place was way too quiet for that many people and rather desultory.

Everyone was watching horses and jai-alai only.

Two dudes sitting at the bar with me were watching jai-alai and when I asked them where the event was (Miami) they seemed really bothered to have to talk to me.

Got that sense from everyone...Asked one guy where I could find a football feed and he shoved past me like I was a cop and he had a stack of paper out on him....LOL....Which he may have had, along with a bunch of the other guys there.

One more note about my bigg horse bet....I did have a friend with me for good conversation and there was another guy there that was watching the horses and got rapping with us about the depressed economy in Hartford.

He's the one I asked to help me place my bet in the Automatic Bet Machine gimmick. I asked him who was the Fave and his response was, "Oh that horse is only about 1/1...you can't make any money with that."

Of course that's the horse that won and I thought silently, "You could have made 1 to 1...."

ICEMAN, it's the faster delivery of a horse race.

You get your Fix in about 2-3 minutes instead of over 2-3 hours.

Crack compared to powder cocaine....heh

live north of Norhville and frequent Sports Creek Raceway( for otb), what a hole. They want to close down live racing. 15 years ago it was hard to find a seat on the weekends.

Never miss a chance, the smaller the track, the more enjoyable. My local track is a joke, although one of the finest scenery wise and a great day/night out, I could beat most of the horses. If you approach a Bookie with more than £50 in your hand, the chalk-board is wiped clean in an instant, great stuff.:drink:

That's funny b/c I am the exact opposite. I sweat my sports action much more than my horse action.

The worst is poker. I could lose $700 on a horserace without so much as a grimace. But if I get 2 outed on a $70 poker hand, I throw a tantrum.

As for the track, I haven't been there for years. But it would be nice to be at ground level again and hear the stampede. You lose appreciation for how powerful it sounds when you watch the simulcast.

reminds me of a old horse racing story. When I was a junior in High school use to go to the track 3-4 nites a week with buddy. After a night of losing my buddy would bitch at me the whole way home that the races were rigged he was never going back and blamed me for ever talking him into going. Next day at school he wouldn't say one word to me, had an attiude all day towards me. Around 6 pm that night I would here a beep beep sound in my driveway and look out there to see his car. I would walk out there and he would have a program in his hand and be talking a hundred miles an hour about who he liked in the 1st. Needless to say I would lie to my mom and jump in his car and away we would go. This story repeated itself thought my high school years. The good ole days. I think back and wonder how I always managed to come up with enough money to bet.

With parimutual, offshore and the computer fewer and fewer people attend. But lets make one thing clear owning and winning a horse race is one of the most satisfing enjoyments in life. But I must confess I go less and less because I know I can make alot more money behind the computer. For example I have a horse running Sat at Belmont Race 1.Will I be there? No I have more important priorities to take care of.

Everyone should own a race horse some time in there lives.Nothing expensive for the first timer.Trust me,it will be a high youll never forget if you can win.Go Captain Squire.GREENHEAD

I used to go to the track every Saturday and Sunday from the early 70's to the late 80's. Sometimes weekdays also. Even took off 3 months to go everyday. But with the ability to watch on line or television followed by the offshore world, I don't think I've been for at least a half dozen years now. It's really a shame as some very valuable land in this area that used to be packed full with fans is now bare by comparison. Seems that across the nation the only time fans turn out in large volumes are the big racing days, like this Saturday with the Breeder's Cup being held at Belmont Park. I'll simply be at home watching and wagering and pulling for one of our fellow posters to have success in the Classic.

Well said. When you own a horse or have an interest in one, it is like watching your child coming down the stretch. Have seen the entries for the Cup on Saturday. Wishing you the best of luck.

It's funny you post this I was going to start a thread later this week or so about owning one. I just got talked into buying a 4 year old trotting mare(name is Imonamission) who hasn't race yet. I expect to lose money but am doing it for the thrill and hope to break even.

Owning horses is on my list of things-to-do. From your experience, how easy is it to at least break-even with your revenues & expenses?
