Unless you're running at a place with slots-buyoed purses, buying a cheap claimer is a tough go. Between training, injuries, layups, vetting. licensing, shipping, etc. etc. etc. there's little hope to even break even. That is unless you're running at one of the racinos. Then you could take a shot at a horse for a quarter or 3500 and try to grind out a buck.

Whereabouts are you Mr. Jones?

unless you have money to burn you should look into a partnership where people put up say 5 or 10K each to get in. Purses at some tracks are big enough for cheap races now to make a profit possible , IF you have a good trainer and some luck.
The thrill of seeing 'your' horse win a race is incredible, even if you have to stand in the winner's circle with a crowd of other co-owner's

Labeeb,

I'm a relatively short ride from Tampa Bay Downs where a fortune need not be spent.

And Fisher, my financial situation is a bit improved so I could take a flyer if only for the bloody sport of it sir. Only problem I see is that it would conflict with the serious business of foots and college baskets.

Oh yeah almost forgot I am zoned for two horses at the swamp here.

My good friend claimed a mare for $8,000 dollars from Frank Calabrese about 6 years ago. The mare had 3 wins and a 2nd in 4 lifetime starts. Mare won her final race that she was claimed in by 4 under wraps at 3-5. My buddy wins a eight claim shake and claimed the mare. Mare vetted out lame, knee and ankle chips never raced again. Mare was breed by strom cat so horsemen made offers up to $20,000 after she was claimed for $8000. My friend should have sold her imediately, but he didn't. After surgery and $20,000 in expenses later the horse began training, trainer tells my friend mare is a winner and has a huge heart. Mare becomes lame during her comeback training and never raced again. Trainer buys the horse from my buddy for 5000 or $10,000. She eventually(female trainer in chicago) sells it to another party for $20,000, and subsequenty we found out the mare was purchased at and auction for $60,000.

Was part of a partnership which owned 2 horses. Can get pretty expensive. We had a very nice offer for the one horse before he ever ran a race. I was the only one who voted to sell. The horse looked much better than he ever ran. Eventually got claimed for somewhere around 5g. The other horse broke down, first time out and had to be deystroyed. If you have some extra money to piss away and you love horse racing, then go ahead. Otherwise no.

just bought a 4 year old mare who han't been to the track. A buddy of mine (trainer) said the original owner didn't have time or money for horse. Cost me $3,000 for horse and close to a 1,000 a month in bills. Figured it all out on paper and if EVERYTHING goes right I may break even. Still had to do it once. The trainer thinks you maybe a diamond in the rough. Still about a month away from first start. Just figure it will be alot of fun but I'm pretty sure It will get old fast if I start having to right alot of checks.

Get ready to write a LOT of checks! That's the horse business.

$1000 per month is a pretty damn good day rate, no matter where you are.
