Ever heard of a local who couldn't win and had to close shop?

Absolutely, positively possible.

A little underfunded, a little in over his head....very, very easy.

It happened to a few locals in the 85-86 season. The Patriots covered 12 or 13 straight weeks. By the time the playoffs rolled around the Boston area locals got nothing but Patriot money and the Pats won 3 straight as road dogs on their way to the SB and by that time a few couldn't pay what they lost in the AFC championship game. The locals who perserverd got much of it back when the Pats disgraced the entire region 2 weeks later.

With big favs covering teasers, I'm sure there are some locals around on the brink.

Disregard my response...I thought the thread was about a bookie that couldn't lose and still closed up. :drink:

Underfunded...and the past two years, with all the favorites winning every which way, most definitely.

One local I used closed up, not because his clients were winning, but because he had no way of using force if someone decided not to pay up. His partner was a "little person" standing about 3'-2", not exactly imposing!! :drink:

Have seen a number go under through the years. Didn't keep their clients limits in check and got greedy. Some were not sharp on numbers. Others lacked the experience and funds to survive, not unlike some offshore shops that open up and then fold.

Exactly...offshore offer the bonuses which is the same money being given away/lost as the street books that don't get to collect 100% of the losses because guys stiff.

A painful memory

This goes back many years, but when I first started playing and was looking for a guy who did college hoops, a friend of a friend put me on to a guy who was just starting out. I lost the first couple of weeks and of course the guy showed up like clockwork to collect. Then I got it going and pounded him for about three weeks and was into him for nearly seven dimes, which is still big money for me now but was absolutely HUGE for me then. He had some excuse as to why he couldn't make it for the payoff the first couple of weeks, and then he just disappeared. I never saw a cent of it. I should have known the first time he didn't pay off on a weekly basis that it was time to get after him, but I was naive as hell about the business back then and didn't realize what a huge red flag that was. I also should have known he was in way over his head because--and no doubt this is why I was able to pound him--he used the lines published in the morning newspaper!

That exerience still burns me to this day. I swear to God, if I could have hired someone to collect for me without fear of prosecution I would have done so. In fact if this guy is still alive I may still pay him a visit someday.

Ive known a few to fold up the tent.

Nights like last week MNF when the favorite and over cash, along with all teasers cashing are very bad for bookies.

Locals closeing ALL the time for one reason or another. Have many around here and they ALL are looseing this year. To many favorites cover the last few weeks for sure.
Some have under funded operations and that seems to be the main thing at this time of the year.
One local told me that he was tired of looseing Everyweek an that he had won only once this year. Now this operation has LOTS of money but see's that its not as easy to win no matter what the circumstances may be this year.
