He was not great but had the greatest explanation of a penalty for roughing the passer

Ben Dreith, NFL referee, explaining a 15-yard penalty over the intercom: "Number 99 of the defense, after tackling the quarterback, was giving him the business."

Ben Dreith - who said Ben Dreith?

I hate Ben Dreith, the year was 1976 -- game AFC Divisional Playoffs - teams -- Patriots at Raiders. The Raiders, whose only regular season loss had come at the hands of The Pats 48-17 were in a real dogfight together. The game was close and was settled in the final seconds with a touchdown run by Oakland quarterback Ken Stabler. Many Patriots fans to this day think that touchdown should never have happened, blaming a roughing-the-passer penalty earlier in the drive that should not have been called. The referee, Ben Dreith, was not allowed to officiate Patriots games EVER again. ESPN voted this bad call as the 19th worse sports blunder during the last 25 years (vote taken in 2000).

"Over the years", Jerry Markbright (sp?) has to be in the discussion. Grier and Carey are good but they bag too many games for my taste, mostly on MNF. I don't think Hocculli is as corrupt as those two, so I'd give him the edge amongst the active refs.

Ben Dreith is a dirty word in New England. If they had a vote for the worst, he'd get a lot of them.

I would go with Hochuli or Grier

BTW- I haven't seen Grier all season...

Hochuli seems to be the most recognized IMO

One of the BESt I ever saw at making sure a fixed game was taken care of was Jerry Markbreight! Of course he was only one of many in the 80's!
