Anyone ever look for a referral to a local?

How many posters here know of sports bettors in their circle of friends/acquaintances who use a local that you have asked for a referral? I'm looking for a local and have my ear to the ground but no one has ever let on that they bet sports or even know someone who does. I realize that it's not the type of info you just offer to the crowd but I've NEVER heard it alluded to. It's not as if wives are in earshot or I have any connection to the law. Everyone I know knows that I dabble in legally gray area activities (mail order cubans, online poker, d/l pirated movies, etc.) so it's not like I would be shocked to hear they played a few games this weekend.

Suggestions?

I feel like I'm back in college looking for a hookup on some weed...but even then there were ways to identify those who could help you out.

I cannot imagine any bartender in New Jersey, where you are a regular who would not be able to hook you up with a local!

Valid point. I figured a local bar might have a resident local but unfortunately I don't frequent any bar regularly enough to solicit a name/#. I guess I will keep looking for clues or resort to just asking the question.

Yeah, I "dabble" in human trafficking. Just a side hobby when I'm not busy with my nuclear arms trading club.

My advice would be to forget about finding a local guy, and set up an account in an offshore sportsbook like Olympic or Pinnacle.....

I started out with a local guy and from personal experience I can tell you there is an obvious night and day difference between betting with a local guy and using an offshore....first off, with a local, you're stuck with a narrow betting window and betting whatever lines he decides he wants to put out...a quality sportsbook has lines out early and available to bet for most of the week, and those two books I mentioned have totals on damn near all the college football games, where most books are too lazy to even copy lines and settle for giving totals on tv games only.....

The only edge I ever had with my local was that he never moved Saturday lines when I bet on Thursday night, sometimes he'd let me bet Saturdays games early, sometimes not......the only other good thing was the ease of transferring money....

Most of the rest of using a local guy sucked....narrow betting window, constant busy signals, and I know damn well he dealt out double lines according to his bettor's tendencies......low limits, few totals, too protective.....

Trust me, if you get an offshore account set up at a really A+ shop, you'll forget about all the bullshit a local guy represents.

Thanks for the input. I already have plenty of offshore outs. I was looking for a local primarily for two reasons; a. because I've never used a local and want to say I did and b.for the occasional scalp opportunity.

Phig, your best bet are bars. Smaller local bars. Hang out in one for about a month, and after you get to know the bartender, ask him.

I think you'll have to establish yourself as a person that can be trusted....if you come out too strong towards total strangers you'll just get the cold shoulder....

I had a guy come up to me one time in a bar....he was a total stranger....asked me where he could score some weed.....I don't inhale, I know some people that do, but I wasn't going to send him their way, as I was thinking for all that I know he could have been a cop/narc....

If you're set on getting a local probably your best bet would be your close friends who know you and could vouch for your rep and that you can be trusted and not get the local guy busted....

Jersey is not a good scene these days for locals. Lots have been busted or near busted in the last year or so. In Morris county they even are taking away all the asian massage parlors and that means no more happy ending sundaes for all us good guys. I know a local guy in jersey but he will toss your ass fast once he knows your scalping and middling. All he has to do is look at your betting pattern and your toast.
