I saw a headline to that effect in one of those sleazy Enquirer-type papers in the supermarket yesterday. Their news is as reliable as Wayne Root;s.

Wow...I'd hate to see him if he looked bad then. I think the moron may know something after all.

So irnoic that a guy who told the government to stick up their ass receives the highest honor a civilian can receive. Where was this medal 35 years ago?

Maybe someone can tell me what Ali did to deserve a medal.

Dodge the draft in a blaze of cowardice?

Fight a long string of tomato cans to pad a once admirable record?

I'm 43 years old. I approached the Army, Army Reserve, National Guard and Washington National Guard to volunteer after 9/11. I was turned down by all due to age.

What's your excuse ass clown?

Calm down dickbag. I don't need an excuse, because I'm not the one criticizing other people's decisions to opt out of participating in a war they don't believe in.

Ali took the freedoms of America and refused to pay the price. That is being a coward. Maybe folks in Prague can tolerate decades of Soviet domination of their country, but we do things differently in America. We fight when our freedoms and ideals are threatened.

Freedom isn't free,

Unless you're Ali.

what the hell are you talking about? Last I checked, ALL people currently in our armed forces VOLUNTEERED! Why would they need me? Now if I was drafted, I'd go....

I'm not criticizing his decisions - if I was drafted right now I would go to jail before being forced to kill other human beings. Just ironic and funny that the government would be all two faced now and give him a medal.

i didnt like ali much, especially when i did my tour in nam, and he got out of it. I did have a chance to meet him in the mid 80's, and had lunch with him on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, he was a perfect gentleman, one of the nicer persons i ever met.

my son still has the autograph he did for him framed

i try not to look back at the 60's, too many bad memories being sold down the river by johnson and the mac

I'm an American, numbnuts. So your poor attempt at insulting an entire country is falling on deaf ears. Ali made a public stand that was a lot more courageous than, say, getting a deferment or going into the National Guard, the easy ways out. And no, I am not criticizing anyone who served in the National Guard. I am not passing judgment here whatsoever. Ali paid the price for his actions, losing some of the prime years of his career and being stripped of his title.

So my original question remains unanswered...

Why would he be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom?

Can't answer you there, although the charges against him were later dropped, so technically speaking his actions were at that point sanctioned by the government. It does seem strange though.
