This is my take on this as a whole not this one game. See Americans in large part don't get soccer cause it isn't there passion (well duh I know i'll explain) but to the rest of the world soccer is there national identity its there stamp on the rest of the world and quite frankly the States doesn't need to care about it the game by in large cause USA is the world's super power and the US has other sports that invoke that type of passion however on a local level (baseball and football) but to the rest of the world soccer is what puts them on the map and gives those people a sense of pride about the country that they live in. So that is just my opinion why they are so wrapped up in a simple game.

I love soccer. When played on a world class level it is a beautiful game.
I am very much involved in the top European Leagues.

For all those who bitch about where the US comes in for FIFA rankings:

The U.S. concludes the year with a 13-3-4 record, an all-time high for wins and the best-ever winning percentage (.750) in a season where the team has played more than 10 games, breaking the record of .733 set just last year when the U.S. went 8-1-6 in 15 games.

Granted it may not be playing European squads, but add that to winning the WC qualifying group and the region's championship tournament this year, the MNT is poised for a big effort in Germany. I can already hear the jeers coming from the "old world" when they get a much deserved higher seed for the draw, but every true fan who has backed the squad for years couldn't care less.

See you all in Germany, I plan on attending the first round...

You drew 1-1 with a country about 1/20th the size of a US State ;-)
