I have been betting sports since i was 6 years old (football cards) but am a newbie when it comes to poker. How is the best way to learn? Books? Trial and error? Classes? I would like to learn how to play but not sure which way is the best way.

Also, How much truth do the resident players give to this statement:

"In the game of online poker, 20% of the players win 80% of the profits
in the long term."

Poker is a game of skill. The best way to learn is to first get a basic understanding of the game, and then go and try it out. I'm a prominent member at flopturnriver.com (mods, if it's not ok to post this, please feel free to delete it); you can learn a lot of information there.

That statement is a lie. It's more like 5% of the players win long term and 95% are net losers in the end.

That being said, make sure that you definitely have the time commitment and work ethic if you want to play poker profitably. Bankroll management works the same way with poker that it does with sportsbetting; even the best player will go bust if he doesn't manage his money well. Also, think really hard if you want to go and play poker; to be honest, the craze is starting to die now and the are slowly, but steadily drying up. There are, however, still lots of fish to be fed upon. The choice is ultimately yours.

If you have any more questions, please hit me up. Best of luck to ya!:howdy:

I would start off with reading books while playing "play money" games at one of the many sites that offer it. A few books that i would read are David Sklansky's "theory of poker", Brunson's "super system", Caro's book of Poker tells (more to learn how to avoid showing your own tells).

After you have played enough "Play money" where you are consistently winning, i would start off at the lowest stakes limit poker games and then moving your way up to higher and higher limits as you discover that you are consistently beating the lower limits. it can take months before you are playing decent level limits.

I have been playing poker since i was 6 or 7 so the basics of the game was something i never had to "learn." So i am not sure if you need to get a true beginners book, but the books i recommended should cover what you need. If not you can probably get any beginners book to learn the basics.

I have plenty of friends that have tried online poker and they are all down in the long term. So make sure you learn the game very well before playing and also learn the patience that is needed to deal with the ups and downs poker hands you.

If you have any questions, you can shoot me an email at gambling1015@aol.com and i can do my best to guide through some information that i wasn't aware of before i started playing. good luck either way.

For a new person i would recommend 3 things

1....Read every book you can find....3 times!!!! ( to new players i always recommend internet poker by matthew hilger..i would also add hold-em poker by gary carson for those interested in mostly playing in their local casinos or home games)

2....Find a smaller site that offers $1-$2 buy-in tournys ( not rebuys!!) then play as many as you possibly can in the shortest amonut of time possible.....( id recommend intertops)

3......when watching poker on t.v....pay no attention at all to the hands they play!!!! this is mostly final table play and bears NO resemblance at all to a real game nor a cash game that you would likely find at your local casino

With all due respect I have to disagree with the advice to play play money. Maybe ast the very start to get to know how the games moves, blinds order of play etc. but people should not think they can beat even a small game because they smashed the play money. All it will do is teach bad habits.Poker is a money game and there's little to be gained by playing for nothing.
